Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Camden, NJ - September 11, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-33, 53-77) were defeated by the Camden Riversharks (25-35, 53-77) 3-0 at Campbell's Field on Friday night in the opener of a three game weekend series in the Garden State. The Bluefish have now been victimized by the shutout bug on the scoreboard for the eighth time this season.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cory Riordan (5-5) was tagged with the loss, tossing seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking one, striking out five, surrendering one home run and hitting a batter. The right hander and local product out of Killingworth, Connecticut collected his team-leading tenth quality start and fourth straight in the process. Camden Starting Pitcher Daniel Herrera (7-4) picked up the victory with a quality start of his own, firing seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits while walking one and striking out five. Matt Gorgen retired the side in order in the top half of the ninth inning, striking out two to record his league leading 31st save on the 2015 campaign.

The pitcher's duel remained scoreless until the home half of the fifth inning, when Paddy Matera launched a leadoff solo home run to left field off Riordan to give the home team a 1-0 lead. It was the fifth big fly of the season for Matera, and the 12th allowed by Riordan in 17 overall appearances. Herrera held on to the one-run cushion handed to him keeping the 'Fish off the scoreboard for two more innings, and then handed the game off to his bullpen. Looking for insurance in front of the Riversharks faithful, Camden sent seven batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh once again off Riordan, adding two more runs to extend the cushion to 3-0. Matera was at it again, leading off the frame with a double. With one out, Evan Crawford was hit by a pitch to put runners and the corners. Matera would cross the plate on an error by Bridgeport third baseman Wilson Batista on a ground ball off the bat of Mike Kerns, and Crawford would later score on an RBI single by Daniel Rockett. The bullpen duo of Dan Blewett and Gorgen retired all six Bluefish batters they faced, striking out three, and Bridgeport was dealt their ninth consecutive loss and their seventh straight defeat on the road. Welington Dotel led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits, including his 30th double, tops overall in the Atlantic League.

Bridgeport continues their series with the Camden Riversharks on Saturday night. The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, September 15th when they welcome in the First Half Liberty Division Champion Somerset Patriots for a three game series in the final homestand of the 2015 season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a 1999 Atlantic League Championship Pin.
