Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - Behind what LHP Amir Garrett (W, 1-0) called the best start of his career, the Daytona Tortugas kickstarted their playoff run with a 3-0 win over the Clearwater Threshers on Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

In short, Garrett was untouchable. The Florida State League Co-Pitcher of the Year allowed one single in seven innings, striking out a career-high 12 batters without issuing a walk. Andrew Pullin reached on a dropped third strike to break up Garrett's perfect game bid in the fourth, and Rhys Hoskins hit a two-out single in the seventh to break up the no-hitter.

The 23-year-old even managed to strike out batting champion Willians Astudillo (.314 average), who had only gone down on strikes 10 times in 107 regular season games.

Meanwhile, Daytona Beach native DH Daniel Pigott gave the Tortugas an early lead. LF Jeff Gelalich stole second base after a one-out walk in the first inning, and moved to third after Astudillo's throw bounced away toward left field. RHP Ricardo Pinto (L, 0-1) managed to strike out RF Sebastian Elizalde, but Pigott came through with a two-out line drive single to left, giving Daytona a 1-0 edge. The 25-year-old reached base three times (1B, BB, HBP) and stole his first base of the season in the third inning.

Elizalde came through in his second at bat, again given a chance to hit with a runner on third and one out. He drove Pinto's first pitch to the left field warning track, and scored CF Junior Arias to double Daytona's lead. Arias had drawn a leadoff walk, stolen second base, and moved to third on a ground out from Gelalich.

3B Taylor Sparks added an exclamation point with a towering blast in the sixth inning to put the Tortugas further in front, 3-0. He now moves into a three-way tie for first place in the FSL with 14 home runs.

RHP Carlos Gonzalez (H, 1) took the ball in the eighth, and used two strikeouts to work around a single in a scoreless frame. RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 1) issued a leadoff walk in the ninth, but got a double play and a fly out to finish off the Threshers.

1B Chad Wallach had the game's only multi-hit effort, collecting a pair of singles. The Tortugas went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, but Clearwater never had a man reach second base.

Daytona has now won six consecutive games, including three of their last four against the FSL North first and second half champions.

The Threshers host Game 2 at Bright House Field on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Tortugas can clinch the three-game series -- and a trip to the FSL Championship -- with a win in Game 2 or Game 3 (if necessary). RHP Nick Travieso (6-6, 2.70 ERA) will face RHP John Richy (0-0, 2.84 ERA) on Wednesday.

Daytona is just 2-7 in Clearwater this season, but Wednesday will be Travieso's first career start at Bright House Field. Fans can listen to the game on The Great Voice of Volusia County, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
