Rochester Red Wings News Release
ALLENTOWN, PA - Jose Martinez went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 8-1 Monday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park in the season finale for both teams.
The Red Wings (77-67) finish with the exact same record for the third straight season. Rochester has finished at least 10 games over .500 three seasons in a row for the first time since four straight years from 1973-76.
For Martinez, it was his first four-hit game since July 17 of last season at Triple-A Albuquerque for Sacramento and recorded his first multi-homer game since July 13, 2012 vs. Double-A Frisco for Corpus Christi.
Both teams came out hacking early as Red Wing starter Taylor Rogers (11-12) threw his first 20 pitches for strikes including needing just six in the first frame. Martinez hit his first homer of the day with a two-run shot in the second to give the Wings a 2-0 lead against Severino Gonzalez (2-7).
Tyler Pastornicky cut the IronPigs (63-81) deficit in half with an infield single in the bottom of the third against Rogers. Argenis Diaz gave Rochester a two-run lead once again with an RBI double in the fourth. Eric Farris benefitted from a dropped foul ball that extended his at-bat in sixth and he capitalized by grounding an RBI single to give the Red Wings a 5-1 lead. A wild pitch in the eighth gave Rochester a 6-1 advantage.
Wings pitching was spectacular again in this series as the Red Wings outscored the IronPigs 26-3 in the three games. Rogers allowed one run on seven hits in 6.0 innings, Alex Meyer tossed 2.0 scoreless in relief and Aaron Thompson closed the game out in the ninth.
Martinez highlighted a three-run ninth with his second two-run homer of the day to cap the scoring.
The Wings finished in second place in the International League North behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The RailRiders will travel to Indianapolis for the first of two games beginning Wednesday. Norfolk hosts Columbus in the other best-of-five series.
Rochester opens the 2016 season at Scranton/WB on Thursday, April 7 and host the RailRiders in the Home Opener on Saturday, April 9 at Frontier Field.
