Attack Fall in Pre-Season Opener

Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack opened the 2015-16 Ontario Hockey League pre-season with a trip to Barrie to take on their Central Division rival Colts on Labour Day Monday.

While the result wasn't how Owen Sound wanted to start the pre-season, the Attack and Colts thrilled in a game that saw a 4-3 shootout result favour the home side.

Barrie got on the board early when Cordell James beat Michael McNiven with a shot just over three minutes into the opening frame.

The Attack pressed as the period wore on, but were unable to capitalize on a tripping penalty to Barrie's Lucas Chiodo and the teams went to break with the Colts up 1-0.

Just as Barrie scored early in the 1st period, it was Owen Sound's turn to get on the board quick in the 2nd.

Looking to make a triumphant comeback from a season lost to injury, Brett Hargrave tallied his first goal of the pre-season with 5:49 gone in the middle stanza. Rookie forward Nick Suzuki assisted on the goal, getting his first taste of success in an exhibition setting.

After being down going into the 2nd period, the Attack had brought themselves back to level footing with just 20 minutes of action to play.

The even score would only last until there was 12:15 left in the game though. With Tyler MacArthur in the box serving a holding penalty, Brandon Prophet made good on a powerplay marker to put the Colts back up by a goal.

Owen Sound wouldn't go down without a fight though, and fan favourite Petrus Palmu would make good on a Connor Walters pass with just under three minutes to play.

Palmu's first of the pre-season tied the game at two before Suzuki added his 2nd point of the game to put the visitors up 3-2 with time winding down.

Barrie was determined to spoil the comeback though, and Julius Nattinen would beat Jack Flinn, who entered the game halfway through the 2nd period, to force overtime with just 42 seconds left in regulation.

The Attack got their first taste of three-on-three action thanks to Nattinen's late goal, but Monday night's game needed a shootout to determine the winner.

Despite a first round goal by overage forward Josh Sterk, the Attack were unable to muster any more offence in the skill's competition while the Colts scored twice on five attempts to walk away with a 4-3 win.

McNiven would finish the game with 17 saves on 18 shots, while Flinn turned away the 12 of 14 he faced.

Also registering points for Owen Sound on the night were Jacob Busch and Santino Centorame who both assisted on Suzuki's 3rd period goal.

The Attack will return to action against these same Colts for an exhibition game on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Bayshore.

Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm, and tickets can be purchased at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office or by calling 519-371-7452.

Single game seats for all 2015-16 regular games are also on sale.
