Peterson's Labor of Love Produces 8-6 Win

BINGHAMTON, NY - Outfielder-turned-pitcher Brock Peterson threw three scoreless innings and earned the win as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Altoona Curve, 8-6, in twelve innings on Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Vince Belnome belted a two-out, two-run homer in the final frame to help the B-Mets close the regular season with their eighth walk-off win.

After the B-Mets failed to score in the ninth against outfielder-turned-pitcher Jonathan Schwind, Peterson moved from left field to the mound for his fourth career pitching appearance. The 13-year veteran worked around a two-out double in a scoreless tenth and side-stepped a leadoff single in the eleventh. In the twelfth, Adam Frazier ripped a one-out double, but was thrown out attempting to advance on a grounder to short.

Following three blank innings from Schwind, Andy Vasquez inherited the tie game in the twelfth. The hard-throwing converted-position player gave up a leadoff single to Joe Benson before recording consecutive outs. With the B-Mets staring down the threat of a 13th inning, Belnome blasted a 0-1 pitch beyond the right-field wall, sending Binghamton to their 77th win of the season.

The B-Mets were forced to play from behind after Altoona jumped out of the gate with five runs in the first two innings. Mickey Jannis walked four of the eight batters he faced and allowed three runs before getting the hook in the opening inning. The Curve hung two runs on Kevin McGowan in the second.

A trio of walks by Robert Stock opened the door for the B-Mets in the third. After the righty filled the bases, Victor Cruzado scorched a grounder off Andy Vasquez's glove at first to bring in two runs.

Trailing 6-2, Binghamton put themselves back in contention with a four-run fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Eric Wood booted Jared King's skipping grounder at third, allowing LJ Mazzilli to come home. Amed Rosario beat out a potential inning-ending double play, bringing another run in and prolonging inning. Peterson scampered in from third on a wild pitch by Clario Perez and Albert Cordero tied the game by threading a two-out RBI single into right.

Four B-Mets relievers bridged the gap from McGowan to Peterson with 4-1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Beck Wheeler, Adam Kolarek, Jeff Walters and Paul Sewald all capped their regular seasons' with shutout appearances.

Peterson (1-0) allowed three hits to become the first B-Met position player in franchise history to register a win. He collected one strikeout, fanning Austin Meadows in the 10th. Vasquez (0-1) took the loss.

The B-Mets (77-64) open the Eastern Division Championship Series against the Reading Fightin Phils at home on Wednesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Tyler Pill takes the mound in Game 1. POSTGAME NOTES: Peterson is the first B-Met position player to pitch since Joe Bonfe faced the Portland Sea Dogs in the 15th inning on July 12, 2013...B-Mets batters walked 11 times, the highest single-game total since they collected the same number on April 21, 2013 against New Hampshire...at four-hours, two-minutes it was the longest regular season finale in franchise history by 32 minutes
