Wings Use Miscues to Knock off IronPigs
September 6, 2015 - International League (IL1) - Rochester Red Wings News Release
ALLENTOWN, PA - Rochester capitalized on three Lehigh Valley errors over the first three innings as the Red Wings knocked off the IronPigs 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.
The Red Wings (76-67) struck first in the second inning. Danny Ortiz and Josmil Pinto opened the inning with singles and an error allowed Ortiz to reach third base. Doug Bernier's RBI single one batter later gave Rochester a 1-0 lead. Argenis Diaz added an RBI double and a throwing error later in the frame allowed Bernier to score and the Wings led 3-0.
Michael Bowden (11-5) kept the IronPigs (63-80) off the board in the bottom half of the second despite two singles in the inning. Russ Canzler led off with a single but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it to a double by Eric Farris. Lehigh Valley pushed a man to second following a single and a stolen base but Bowden was able to get a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning.
Rochester once again capitalized on a miscue after a throwing error allowed Ortiz to score from second and Oswaldo Arcia to reach second base on a double play attempt. A wild pitch moved Arcia to third and Bernier collected his second RBI single of the day to give the Wings a 5-0 lead.
The IronPigs got on the board with a Kelly Dugan RBI single in the third. Bowden surrendered just one run on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings. He departed with two runners on base in the sixth but Loek van Mil retired the next two hitters to strand both runners.
Chris Leroux yielded one hit and two walks over 5.1 scoreless innings to keep Lehigh Valley in the game. The IronPigs did not threaten until the ninth inning against Mark Hamburger. Hamburger retired the first two hitters with ease but Arcia dropped the would-be final out of the game. Lehigh Valley used the error to load the bases and the tying run was suddenly at the plate. Hamburger struck out Dugan to end the game, pushing the Rochester winning streak to three.
The Wings complete the 2015 season Monday afternoon in Allentown as Taylor Rogers opposes Severino Gonzalez. A Rochester win would complete the third straight 77-67 season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
