Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN September 6, 2015 - It has been a long week for the Gary South Shore RailCats with several chances to end their losing streak. Sunday at US Steel Yard the RailCats did not waste one of their best overall games of the season in a 3-0 shutout of the Kansas City T-Bones on a muggy day on the south shore.
Travis McGee was impressive in his final start of the season going 6.2 giving up four hits and sending seven "bones" down via the strike out. McGee at one point struck out six consecutive batters in getting the win (3-2) for Gary. Kansas City never threatened against the righty from California.
The RailCats used a methodical offensive approach to get to Kansas City starter Bobby Doran. The Cats took the lead in the second on an unearned run. Jose Sermo walked and then stole second. Alex Hernandez then walked to put runners at first and second and no outs. Michael Vaughn popped up a bunt to the pitcher Doran attempting to move the runners with a sacrifice. The RailCats were about to waste the scoring chance but the Kansas City defense made sure that would not happen.
Spencer Mahoney hit what looked like a double play ball to short. Kansas City was able to force out Hernandez at second but the relay throw from second baseman Sergio Leon bounced short of first baseman Kyle Robinson allowing Sermo to come around and score with two outs on the error.
The RailCats added another two in the sixth still facing Doran. With one out Hernandez and Vaughn both worked walks and Mahoney then singled up the middle to score Hernandez and it was 2-0. Josh Tols came in for Kansas City to relieve Doran and walked Brennan Metzger. With the bases now loaded Anthony Cheky hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Vaughn and it was 3-0. It was the Portage products first professional RBI. Tols got out of the inning by getting Elbert Devarie to fly out to center.
Andy Roberts came in for the RailCats with two outs in the seventh to replace McGee. Roberts earned the save (3) while Doran was charged with the loss for Kansas City. The RailCats and T-Bones will play the final game of the season Monday with a special 1:00pm Labor Day start at US. Steel Yard. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
