Rangers Drop Steelheads 4-0 in Preseason Opener

September 6, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release

Luke Opilka stopped all 30 shots he faced and the Kitchener Rangers capitalized on a three-goal outburst in a less than three minute span as they convincingly dropped the visiting Mississauga Steelheads 4-0 in their first exhibition game of the season at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on Sunday afternoon.

Opilka was impressive during his first bit of Ontario Hockey League action. The 18-year-old made a handful of key stops on some quality Mississauga opportunities throughout the afternoon to keep his team in control of the scoreboard.

The Rangers took control early, as Nick Magyar's rebound attempt beat Steelheads goaltender Cameron Zanussi just 1:36 into the opening frame, with Gustaf Franzen picking up the assist. It was the lone goal of the period, which saw the visitors outshoot the Rangers 12-10.

The Kitchener offence broke things wide open near the midway mark of the second period when the Rangers added three more goals in a span of just 2:30.

Mark Bzowey gave the home team a 2-0 lead after finishing off a pretty pass by Sean Allen from behind the net at 8:37, then Dylan Di Perna made it 3-0 with a blast from the top of the left circle at 10:01, assisted by Jake Henderson.

Just 1:06 later, Adam Mascherin pounced on a rebound generated by a Zanussi kick save, putting the Rangers up 4-0 at 11:07 with assists to Elijah Roberts and Magyar, rounding out the offence on the afternoon.

Kitchener outshot Mississauga 10-9 in the middle frame, while the Steelheads had a 9-7 edge in the 3rd. Final shots were 30-27 Mississauga.

Neither team could capitalize on the man advantage, as the Rangers went 0-for-6, while the Steelheads were 0-for-5.

Brian Brosnan, Frank Hora, and Ryan MacInnis each wore 'A's and skated as the assistant captains for the game.

The announced attendance was 2,346.

The Rangers hosted their Annual Fan Fest & BBQ from 11am-2pm before the game this afternoon, with proceeds going to support Children's Wish Foundation.

The Rangers continue their exhibition schedule on Wednesday, September 9th when they host the

Niagara IceDogs at The Aud at 7pm. The Steelheads return to exhibition action tomorrow when they travel to Guelph to take on the Storm at 2pm.

The Rangers and Steelheads will meet once more during the preseason, this time at the Mastercard Centre for Hockey Excellence in Toronto on Friday, September 18th at 7:30pm.
