Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Cyclones, who came into Friday night's game with just nine healthy position players, fell to the Connecticut Tigers by the score of 4-3. Brandon Brosher went 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Brooklyn bats.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Tigers drew first blood thanks to a critical error from 1B Jose Garcia. Patrick Mackenzie started the frame with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch from Cyclones starter Kevin Canelon. The lefthander was able to retire the next two batters he faced, while keeping Mackenzie at second base. Corey Baptist then singled deep in the hole at shortstop, and after Alfredo Reyes's throw to first arrived late, Mackenzie tried to score. Garcia, who was making only his second career start at first base, bounced his throw to the plate and allowed Mackenzie to score the game's first runs.

Connecticut tacked on additional runs in the second and fourth innings, both courtesy of RBI singles from Mackenzie, to push their advantage to 3-0.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones offense sputtered, failing to muster much offense through the first five innings. But in the top of the sixth, Brooklyn finally managed to break through. Enmanuel Zabala singled to start the frame and Desmond Lindsay worked a walk to put a pair of runners aboard with nobody out. Jose Garcia then lined a single to left field, but the ball was hit too hard for Zabala to score. Instead the Cyclones settled for a bases loaded opportunity with Brandon Brosher stepping to the plate. The Cyclones catcher, who had just three RBI since August 8th, took advantage of the scoring chance with a bases clearing double to left field that knotted the score at 3-3. Oswald Caraballo then grounded out to third, moving Brosher to third with one out. Hengelbert Rojas then hit a sharp ground ball to third and Brosher tried to score to go ahead run, but was gunned out at the plate by Steven Fuentes.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers roared back. Canelon gave way to LHP Ruben Reyes to start the frame, and the Cyclones reliever walked Franklin Navarro to start the frame. Tanner Donnels then hit a ground ball to second base where Manuel Hilario, who had not started a game at any position other than catcher this season, got a bad read which resulted in a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. After Reyes struck out Keaton Jones for out number one, Steven Fuentes lofted a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Navarro on a sacrifice fly to give Connecticut a 4-3 advantage.

That's how the game would end as Matt Davenport and Jack Fischer combined for 4.0 perfect innings of relief for the Tigers, allowing no hits or walks, while striking out four to close out the win.
