Paniagua Crushes Walk-Off Grand Slam as Revs Earn Dramatic Win

Salvador Paniagua pulverizes a walk-off grand slam in the ninth to give the Revolution a 10-6 victory in the series opener against Bridgeport

On a night where the York Revolution could not take advantage of a slew of early walks issued by the Bridgeport Bluefish, they more than made up for it in the late innings with a more exciting "walk" of their own. The Revs smashed four home runs in Friday night's victory, including two absolute bombs by Nick Ferdinand in the eighth to tie it, leading to Salvador Paniagua's walk-off grand slam in the ninth.

Brandon Boggs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a blast over the big wall in left field, a two-run shot after a two-out Andres Perez walk. It was the 11th homer of the season for Boggs, who tied Bryan Pounds for second on the club.

It didn't take long for Bridgeport to respond however, as the first three batters of the second inning reached for the Fish, prior to Luis Rodriguez blasting a one-out grand slam over the Arch Nemesis in left field for a 4-2 lead.

The home run derby continued two innings later though, when Telvin Nash got one back for York with a majestic solo shot to the left field alley to make it 4-3. It was his fifth for the Revolution since joining the club in June, which will soon be at least six or more, once the homer he hit in the game currently suspended by weather in the fifth inning at Southern Maryland is completed on September 11.

The first runs of the game not scored via home run were plated by the Bluefish in the fifth; back-to-back RBI singles by Atlantic League batting leader Wellington Dotel and C.J. Retherford made it a 6-3 lead for the visitors. At 87 pitches, it was the inning Revs starter Logan Williamson was lifted from the ballgame. His final line was 4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

The Revolution couldn't take advantage of an uneven start by Bridgeport starter Brandon Bixler. The lefty lasted just four innings and issued six walks, only one of which scored on the Boggs homer in the first inning. Bixler allowed four hits total, all three runs against him were earned, and he struck out three.

York cut into the lead in the sixth, when the first three batters reached. A Nash single led to a Paniagua double, and Nash later scored on a Ferdinand RBI fielder's choice, with Nash deftly evading the tag of Luis Rodriguez at home plate to make it a 6-4 game. It was a one-run game once Eric Patterson lifted a sac-fly to right field, scoring Paniagua.

Ferdinand tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when he destroyed the first pitch he saw from reliever Steven Ames over the left field wall, his ninth homer of the season since joining the Revolution on June 5. The two-out solo shot was Ferdinand's sixth homer of the year at home.

The comeback was completed - and then some - in the bottom of the ninth. Singles from Perez and Bryan Pounds led to an intentional walk to Nash in order to get to Paniagua, which loaded the bases. On the very first pitch Paniagua saw from Jimmy Patterson, the longest-tenured position player in Revolution history destroyed it into the Santander Stadium night over the Nemesis in left for a walk-off grand slam. It was Paniagua's sixth long ball of 2015 and his third home run in as many nights. He homered twice and drove in five runs in a 9-2 win over Camden on Wednesday.

Right-hander Mike DeMark earned the winning decision, lowering his ERA to 0.93 in 19.1 innings and 20 appearances this season. DeMark pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
