Norfolk wins over Gwinnett
September 4, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk used an exceptional start from Terry Doyle and a three-run eighth inning to rally for a 3-1 win over the Gwinnett Braves Friday night at Harbor Park.
Doyle (4-1) was extremely efficient as he limited the Braves to just three hits over eight innings of work. The 29-year-old right-hander needed just 86 pitches to navigate the outing, as he retired 20 of the final 21 batters he faced. The only hit he allowed over that span was a solo home run by Jordan Lennerton leading off the fifth inning that gave the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Norfolk's offense was held in check until the eighth inning, when Rey Navarro connected on a one-out solo home off of David Carpenter (3-1) to tie the game at 1-1. Christian Walker followed with a walk, and one out later Rossmel Perez grounded a single into right to put runners at the corners with two outs. Audry Perez followed with a slicing double down the right field line, plating both Walker and Perez and giving Norfolk a 3-1 lead.
Tides closer Pedro Beato then came on and worked a scoreless ninth to register his 16th save of the season, helping Norfolk snap a three-game home losing skid to the Braves.
The victory was Doyle's 16th of the season between Double-A Bowie and Norfolk, making him the first Orioles minor leaguer to register 16 wins in a year since Brad Bergesen in 2008. Doyle's 16 wins rank second in all of Minor League Baseball, trailing the 17 registered by Tampa Bay farmhand Jacob Faria.
The two-run double continued an impressive stretch at the plate for Audry Perez, who has now reached base safely in 17 consecutive games. Over that span, he's hit .317 (19-60) with one home run, four doubles and seven runs batted in.
With the win, the Tides now lead the IL South Division by two games over Gwinnett with three games to play in the regular season. Norfolk's magic number to clinch the division was reduced to two.
The Tides can potentially clinch a playoff berth Saturday as they open a three-game series in Durham, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Chris Jones (8-7, 2.96) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Bradin Hagens (4-5, 2.97).
