Spinners Knocked Out

September 4, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release

ABERDEEN, MD - For the Lowell Spinners, the 2015 season was one of numerous peaks and valleys, ranging from a 9-1 white-hot start to a pair of four-game losing streaks in July and a five-game losing streak in August that pushed the team out of the driver's seat in the New York-Penn League pennant races. Tonight was the epitome of those valleys, as the team dropped its second straight in walk-off fashion, falling to the Aberdeen IronBirds, 3-2.

The loss officially eliminated the Spinners from playoff contention as they fell four games behind the New York Penn League wild card leaders with just three games to play.

The game stayed scoreless until the third inning, when Lowell (36-37) used small ball to take an early lead. Aneudis Peralta singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, was sacrificed to third and then Jhon Nunez lifted a sacrifice fly to play Peralta.

The Spinners scored the game's second run in the sixth as shortstop Carlos Tovar, a recent addition from the Gulf Coast League Red Sox singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a groundout by Mitch Gunsolus.

It seemed as though the Spinners were headed to a clean win until their troubles in the ninth inning came roaring back once more. With one out, Peralta made a fielding error and a single put runners on first and second. Bobby Poyner (1-2, 2.28) entered the game to attempt to close the contest, but allowed an RBI singles to the first two batters he faced, tying the game. After a third straight single loaded the bases, a fielder's choice groundball scored the winning run and the Spinners had their heart broken for a second straight night.

Kevin Steen started and cruised through five innings, striking out three and walking one while allowing just one hit. After allowing a double in the second inning, Steen retired the last 11 batters that he faced. Enmanuel De Jesus, another member of the GCL Red Sox that joined the team this week, was equally as dominant, rolling through three innings before being replaced by Poyner after running into trouble in the ninth.

Lowell put together just four hits, with Peralta, Tovar, Tyler Spoon and newcomer Logan Hill each reaching base via single.

The Spinners come home for the final three games of the regular season tomorrow night as Travis Lakins (0-0, 0.00), a sixth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft makes his Lowell debut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. as gates open at LeLacheur Park at 6 pm. Also, there will be a fireworks show, the final one of 2015, following the completion of the game.
