Midland RockHounds News Release

Sean Manaea struck out thirteen batters in six innings of work, leading the RockHounds to a 4-1 win over the San Antonio Missions Thursday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. With the win, the 2015 RockHounds became just the second club in the franchise's 44-year history to win 80 games in a season. The 'Hounds, 80-56 (with four regular season games remaining in the regular season) also improved to 45-21 in the second half (the franchise's best half-season mark since the Texas League went to the split-season format 39 years ago).

Manaea, acquired by Oakland from Kansas City in the trade deadline deal which sent Ben Zobrist to the Royals, improved to 6-0, with a 1.90 ERA in his seven starts for the RockHounds (he is 6-1, 2.36 in the Texas League, including a short stint with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals).

After Benji Gonzalez lined out to right field to open the home half of the first inning, Manaea struck out the next seven batters he faced. The lefty pitched gave up two hits in the fourth and fifth, but pitched out of both jams, ending both threats with whiffs. The 13 strikeouts are a professional career-high for the Oakland prospect (he struck out 12 batters in a Carolina League game for Wilmington in 2014).

Beau Taylor (2-for-3, run, RBI) and Chad Oberacker (2-for-3, run, stolen base) led the RockHounds at the plate.

Kibbles & Bits

STAT OF THE DAY: Turnabout ... really is fair play. After being robbed of base hits (and at least one RBI) twice by Missions shortstop Benji Gonzalez, both on over-the-shoulder catches in shallow left-center, Wade Kirkland "returned the favor," making brilliant catch on (pinch hitter) Yeison Asencio's would-be RBI single in the ninth. Wade's tumbling grab ended the game.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: The RockHounds have clinched the best half-season in franchise history and the second-best overall record in the franchise's 44 years ... and have become the second club in the franchise's 44 years to win 80 games in a season. While the 1975 Cubs' winning percentage (.604) is out of reach, the RockHounds (with an 80-56 record) would set a new franchise record for most wins in a season by winning two their remaining four games. The '75 club (the only club in the Cubs era to play for the league championship) went 81-53.

- Anthony Aliotti has a 11-game hit streak (14-for-45, .311) and has reached base in 19 straight games (313) with 17 RBI in his last 18 games.

- Brendan McCurry has converted each of his six save opportunities with the RockHounds and is 27-for-28 overall on the season in save chances. Prior to his promotion, McCurry led the (Advanced-A) California League with 21 saves for the Stockton Ports.

- Jaycob Brugman (0-for-2, strikeout, walk, HBP, RBI) lost a nine-game hit streak, but has hit in nine of his last ten games and has reached base in ten straight (15-for-36, .417). Brugman is hitting .458 (11-for-24) with nine RBI in his last seven games.
