Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - The theme of Corpus Christi's final home regular-season series continued Thursday, as strong starting pitching paved the way in a 3-1 decision over Frisco at Whataburger Field before 4,457.

Edison Frias allowed one run over five innings and relievers Gonzalo Sanudo, Chris Cotton, and Jandel Gustave teamed for four shutout frames as the Hooks won their sixth straight over the RoughRiders and sixth of seven overall.

Frias (3-1) yielded six hits and three walks while striking out seven in a 91-pitch start (56 strikes). In his last three starts, the 24-year-old right-hander has 20 strikeouts, three walks, and a 2.45 ERA over 18 1/3.

Thursday, Sanudo whiffed five of the RoughRiders he retired. Cotton tossed a perfect eighth and Gustave logged his 19th save despite singles an out apart in the ninth. Gustave threw water on the RoughRiders rally by inducing a game-ending double play ball off the bat of Luis Marte.

Frias, Sanudo, and Cotton retired 13 straight from the fourth to the ninth.

As was the case Tuesday and Wednesday against Frisco, Corpus Christi (86-50; 38-28) did first-inning damage. George Springer and Danry Vasquez both singled, and an out later A.J. Reed's opposite-field liner found green just inside the left-field chalk for a 2-0 lead vs. Victor Payano.

Frisco (60-75; 31-34) countered two innings later, Marte scoring on an Alfredo Gonzalez passed ball. Marte and Luis Mendez singled during the uprising and Frias issued two walks. The RoughRiders stranded three when Kellin Deglan took a called third strike.

The Hooks added insurance in the eighth, Jack Mayfield coaxing a bases-loaded walk from Jose Valdespina.

Payano (4-4) lasted seven innings for a line of two runs, six hits, a walk and three strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches (59).

RoughRiders right fielder Preston Beck's apparent first-inning home run into the Corpus Christi bullpen was ruled a double.

Chris Devenski (7-4) pitches for Corpus Christi in its regular-season home finale Friday at 7:05. His opponent is Phil Irwin (0-2). All fans enjoy '90s Nickelodeon Night from Radiology Associates. Postgame it's Bud Light Friday Fireworks and the Texas Lottery Lucky Scratch-Off Dance-Off.
