Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - A night after watching their opponents rally for a surprising win with two outs in the ninth, the Lansing Lugnuts (29-36, 71-64) mounted their own charge - but fell 90 feet short in a 6-5 loss to the Great Lakes Loons (29-36, 67-66) on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

In the series opener on Wednesday, Great Lakes scored seven two-out ninth-inning runs to pull out a 7-4 win.

On this night, the Lugnuts found themselves stymied by reliever J.D. Underwood, who had struck out the final batter of the seventh, fanned three batters in a row in the eighth, and whiffed the first two batters of the ninth in protecting a 6-4 lead.

Down to one last gasp, Lugs third baseman Austin Davis reached base on a bloop double underneath left fielder Brian Wolfe's dive. Chris Carlson followed with a liner to right. Jimmy Allen similarly tried for a diving catch, but the the ball bounced past him and the Lugnuts flew around the bases. While Davis scored to bring Lansing within one, Carlson was shown a late stop sign at third base, retreating to the bag.

With the tying run standing at third and the crowd roaring, Underwood (Save, 5) retired Richard Urena on a routine fly to center, handing the Lugs a third straight loss.

Lansing starter Starlyn Suriel (Loss, 8-8) gave up five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings, victimized by a Justin Chigbogu three-run home run in a four-run first inning and a Matt Beaty solo shot in the third.

The Lugnuts answered the Loons' opening rally with four runs of their own in the first, three of them when right fielder Allen misplayed a line drive from David Harris with the bases loaded.

But the Loons' pitchers settled in from there: starter Michael Boyle pitched into the fifth, reliever Colin Hering (Win, 1-0) fired two scoreless frames, and Underwood took over to end the seventh.

In the losing cause, Lugs left fielder Carlson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, with Austin Davis adding two hits in four at-bats.

Friday's regular season home finale is Fan Appreciation Day, featuring a pregame autograph session from 6:00-6:30 p.m., and a Flat Screen Friday presented by Auto-Owners Insurance with flat screen TV giveaways throughout the night. Plus, LAFCU Fireworks after the game!

The Lugnuts send right-hander Justin Shafer (6-4, 3.09) to the hill at 7:05 p.m., opposing Loons right-hander Tommy Bergjans (1-3, 3.86). To purchase tickets, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
