Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Altoona Curve surrendered five runs in the third inning and could not rally back in a 6-3 loss to the Bowie Baysox on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium.
The Curve (72-66) dropped three-of-four in the series. The Baysox (78-59) clinched the Western Division regular-season title with the win.
Jacob Stallings gave the Curve a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI double, but the Baysox erupted for five runs in the third. Corban Joseph evened the score at 1-1 with an RBI single, and Trey Mancini followed with a sacrifice fly to put Bowie in front, 2-1. Quincy Latimore followed with a three-run homer to extend the lead to four.
Making his Double-A debut, Curve starter Tyler Eppler (Loss, 0-1) allowed six earned runs over 5.1 innings on four hits and three walks. He pitched 1-2-3 innings in the first, second and fifth.
The Curve got a run back in the fifth when Stetson Allie crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Bowie starter Nick Additon (Win, 3-2).
The Baysox added a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from David Freitas. Stallings clubbed a solo homer in the seventh and cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Curve brought the potential tying run to the plate in the eighth with one out, but the Baysox brought in closer Andrew Triggs (Save, 17) to escape the jam and record the five-out save.
Reliever Brett McKinney pitched one scoreless relief inning with a strikeout. Josh Smith extended his scoreless streak to 15.2 frames, working 0.2 innings.
Montana DuRapau pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth for his Double-A debut and had two strikeouts.
The Curve begin a four-game road series on Friday night against the Binghamton Mets. Lefty Steven Brault (7-3, 2.40) will be on the mound for Altoona, opposed by right-hander Robert Gsellman (7-6, 2.58) for Binghamton. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
