Biloxi's Subero, Lopez Awarded Top League Honors

BILOXI, MS - Year-end accolades continue to roll in for the Biloxi Shuckers as field manager Carlos Subero has been named Southern League Manager of the Year and Jorge Lopez, the league's Most Outstanding Pitcher. The awards were announced today by the Southern League and was voted on by field managers and media personnel

Subero, 43, led the Shuckers to a Southern League South Division First Half Championship and a 43-25 record, withstanding a 54-game road trip, while MGM Park construction was being completed. Subero leads the Shuckers into the Southern League playoffs during its Inaugural Season as the club has maintained the best overall record in the league, currently 20-games over .500, 76-56. The Caracas, Venezuela native has 874 managerial wins over 14 seasons in professional baseball. Last month, Subero was named manager of the prestigious Arizona Fall League's Surprise Saguaros, where he will lead the top prospects from the Royals, Cardinals, Yankees, Rangers and Brewers organizations.

Subero is in his second season in the Brewers organization as manager at the Double-A level. He led the Huntsville Stars to a 77-63 record and a postseason berth last season. Prior to joining the Brewers, Subero managed five seasons in the Dodgers organization at Class-A Inland Empire (2009), Double-A Chattanooga (2010-12) and Class-A Rancho Cucamonga (2013). He led the Lookouts to the playoffs in 2011 after clinching the Southern League's second-half North Division title with a 42-27 record after the All-Star break. During his only season as a manager in the White Sox organization, Subero led the Birmingham Barons to a 74-63 record and a Southern League playoff berth in 2008.

Lopez, 22, named a mid-season Southern League All-Star and Post-season All-Star adds Most Outstanding Pitcher to his impressive resume. The 70th overall selection in the 2011 draft by the Brewers has set a career-high and is tied for the league lead in wins with 12 in 23 starts - 15 quality. The Puerto Rico native is second in the league with a 2.29 ERA, behind only teammate Tyler Wagner (2.20), and leads the league in WHIP at 1.10, while striking out 134 (third in the league) and holding opponents to a league-best .205 average. Lopez has been a part of a starting rotation that has a league-leading 3.10 ERA and 55 quality starts. Lopez, Wagner and Hobbs Johnson (3.61) all rank among the top-10 in ERA.

Lopez earned Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors in June by going 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in four starts and then again in July after finishing 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA over five starts. Lopez just completed an August in which he went 3-1 with a 1.03 ERA over five starts. In 11 starts since the All-Star Break, Lopez is 7-3 with a 1.68 ERA, adding 76 strikeouts to 24 walks and a .198 opponents' batting average.

Tonight the Shuckers open the final homestand of the regular season at MGM Park, welcoming the Chicago Cubs' affiliate Tennessee Smokies. Tonight is Super Hero Night, plus Diamondhead, Bay St. Louis and Waveland Community Night. LHP Hobbs Johnson (7-7, 3.61) will start for the Shuckers, while RHP Andres Santiago takes the mound for the Smokies. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. The final regular season homestand opens at MGM Park runs through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. There will be back-to-back post-game fireworks shows following Saturday and Sunday's games. The 2015 regular season ends on Labor Day, Monday, September 7 with a 1:10 pm matinee.

The Shuckers have also partnered with First Command Financial Services to recognize a member from the Biloxi Fire and Police Departments as well as a member of the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard. These seven individuals and their family members will be thanked on field before the game and participate in the game's honorary first pitch ceremony.
