Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla., - In a continuing effort to build up the city of Pensacola and its surrounding area, Heisman Trophy Winner Charlie Ward joins the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Front Office as a community coach and ambassador. Ward will remain as the head football coach at Booker T. Washington High School.

"I am very excited about representing the Blue Wahoos as a Community Coach and Ambassador," said Ward. "Ever since I moved to Pensacola, I've been impressed with their commitment with the youth in our area. The fact this will allow me to continue to coach and now increase camps in football, basketball and life skills for the youth in our area is overwhelming and I look forward to serving our community for our youth and parents."

Ward, who played 12 seasons in the NBA, will support the Blue Wahoos in this area by conducting camps, serving as a public speaker and ambassador for the organization.

"While baseball season is only five months long, the dedication to our community is year round," said team president Jonathan Griffith. "This is an additional example of improving the quality of life in the Pensacola metro area."

No stranger to baseball, Ward was selected twice in baseball's amateur draft. In 1993, the Milwaukee Brewers picked him in the 59th round, and the New York Yankees chose him in the 18th round in 1994.

A native of Thomasville, Ga., Ward attended Florida State University and won the 1993 Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Award as quarterback. He also gave legendary coach Bobby Bowden his first National Championship as he led the Seminoles to an 18-16 win over Nebraska in the National Championship game. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Ward is the only Heisman winner to play in the NBA. He played 12 seasons in the NBA with three teams, the New York Knicks (1994-2004), San Antonio Spurs (2004) and Houston Rockets (2004-05). Ward also played basketball at Florida State and pushed the Seminoles to the brink of the 1993 Final Four, falling one game shy.

Off the court, Ward is known for his charitable work through groups like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and in 2011 received the John Wooden Keys to Life award.

Previously he has served as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets and the head football coach at Westbury Christian School in Houston, Texas.

If you are interested in having Charlie Ward speak to your group, please contact Jonathan Griffith at 850-934-8444. Additional camp information will be provided at a future date.
