Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

St. Paul, MN September 1, 2015 - The Gary South Shore RailCats embarked on their final road trip of the season Tuesday facing the team with the second best record the post season bound St. Paul Saints. The RailCats as they have done lately went toe to toe with a quality team for most of the game only to come up short in the end in a 6-2 loss to the Saints.

The RailCats and starter Travis McGee looked to be in trouble early with the Saints loaded the bases in the first inning. Vinny DiFazio delivered and RBI single to make it 1-0 but McGee was able to wiggle out of the jam and the game stayed that way until the fourth.

In the home half of the fourth St. Paul made McGee pay for part of his five walks on the night. Willie Argo walked with one out and then after McGee got Nate Hanson to fly to center, he walked the number nine man Anthony Phillips to put runners at first and second. Alonzo Harris then sent a ball to left field that just cleared the wall for a three run home run and it was 4-0 St. Paul.

The RailCats had no luck cashing on the five walks that Reyes Dorado issued for St. Paul over his first five innings of work. But in the sixth the South Shore chased Dorado from the game with a leadoff walk for Adam Taylor and an RBI double for Dustin Geiger to make it 4-1. Dorado left the game and was replaced by Kevin Cravey. Jaime Del Valle reached on an infield single and there were runners at the corners and no outs. Alex Hernandez then hit into a 1-6-3 double play that scored Geiger to make it 4-2.

The RailCats threatened in the seventh leaving a pair but could not get any closer. In the top of the eighth St. Paul put the game away with a pair of unearned runs. John Kovalik gave up a single to Ian Gac and a double to David Espinosa to start the inning. The RailCats loaded the bases by intentionally walking Willie Argo. Kovalik got a line drive to third with the drawn infield and strike out of Anthony Phillips to get the first two outs. It looked like the reliever would get out of the jam, when Alonso Harris grounded to short but RailCats short stop Jarred Mederos threw wide of second on a force play that went to shallow right that scored two to make it 6-2.

The RailCats could not rally in the ninth and the the loss would send their losing streak to four games and their record to 43-51. Dorado (1-0) picked up the win, while McGee (2-2) was the looser for Gary. The two teams will play game two Wednesday night at CHS Park in downtown St. Paul with LHP Rene Solis (4-6, 4.47) going for the RailCats and RHP Robert Coe (10-3, 2.99) making the start for the Saints. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and the game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com with the pregame at 6:45.
