Biloxi Shuckers News Release

PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers' offense woke up late and used a four-run seventh-inning to take out the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday night, 5-4, behind Garrett Cooper's record-setting five-hit performance at Trustmark Park. The win gives the Shuckers a season victory over the Braves, 12-11, in the final matchup of the regular season between the two clubs, and moves them 2 ? games back of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for first place in the Southern League South with five games remaining.

Biloxi (33-31) had to play from behind early as Mississippi plated the first run of the game in the first. Mycal Jones doubled to start the bottom of the inning and came around to score two batters later on KD Kang's RBI groundout to third.

The Shuckers tied things up with a run in the third. Adam Weisenburger (1x5, R) started the frame with a single and advanced to second on Tyler Wagner's sacrifice bunt. After a ground out to second by Yadiel Rivera (1x4, R, BB) advanced the runner to third, Orlando Arcia (3x5, 2 RBI, R) drove Weisenburger home with an infield single to third.

Arcia's three-hit day was his 15th of the season and 47th multi-hit game of the year which also extended his on-base streak to 16 games.

Mississippi (35-29) plated two runs in the fourth to take a two-run advantage over the Shuckers. Kevin Ahrens lifted a homerun to left-center to put Biloxi in a one-run deficit. Rio Ruiz flew out to left for the first out, but a walk to Steve Rodriguez and an error on Rivera at second allowed Matt Lipka to reach safely and put two on. A groundout to short by Eric Garcia moved the runners up a base after the second out, leading to Greg Ross' RBI single for the second run of the inning.

The Shuckers' deficit grew to three after Ahrens added a RBI single in the fifth off of reliever Brooks Hall (8-8) to drive home Levi Hyams.

Biloxi sent nine men to the plate and struck for four runs to jump on top in the seventh against the Braves' bullpen. Pinch hitter Nick Shaw (0x0, R, BB) walked to start the inning and Rivera singled to put two on for Arcia, who deposited another RBI single to make it a 4-2 game. Taylor Green (0x1, R, BB) walked to load the bases before Josh Fellhauer (0x5) struck out for the first out. Tyrone Taylor (3x5, RBI) drove in Rivera with a single to left to bring the Shuckers within two. Cooper continued his onslaught of Southern League pitching with a two-run double to left to score Arcia and Green to complete the four-spot.

Cooper's five-hit performance makes him 11-for-16 (.688 average) in four games since joining the Double-A squad and puts him in Shuckers' baseball history as the first player to have a five-hit game.

Jacob Barnes took the bottom of the seventh and walked a batter, but struck out two and did not allow any damage. Damien Magnifico worked the final two frames for his 18th save in 20 chances.

The Shuckers will have a day off on Wednesday before returning home to face the Tennessee Smokies for the final five games of the season at MGM Park.
