Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, Md. -The Frederick Keys were eliminated from second-half playoff contention on Tuesday night following a 8-5 setback to the Carolina Mudcats at Nymeo Field. It was the Keys sixth loss in seven games and dropped the team back to 10 games below .500 for the year. Armed with run scoring chances all evening, the orange and black finished 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base.

Trailing 8-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the Keys loaded the bases against Jorge Zavala. Down in the count 0-2, Josh Hart got hit by a pitch, while the Muddies right-hander issued back-to-back walks to Tad Gold and Wynston Sawyer. Carolina manager, Luis Salazar, would turn to his closer Bradley Roney who quickly struck out Yaisel Mederos, before plunking Adrian Marin to force home a run. However Roney bounced back with punch outs of Conor Bierfeldt and Derek Peterson to end the game.

Carolina turned in three separate multi-run innings, grabbing a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Keith Curcio singled and moved to third on a double by Dustin Peterson. The next batter, Tanner Krietemeier, followed with a hump back line drive to shortstop, but Marin failed to make the catch allowing Curcio to score. Carlos Franco then drove in Peterson with a single through the right side.

In the second, the Mudcats loaded the bases with no outs against John Means who surrendered an RBI single to Curcio, before the southpaw escaped the jam thanks to a 5-4-3 double play. Frederick responded one inning later, with two runs off Blair Walters, following three straight singles and consecutive RBI bounce outs by Hart and Gold.

From there, Carolina rattled off five unanswered runs. With men on first and third in the fourth, Connor Lien brought in Joseph Odom with a sac-fly, while Curcio added his third hit, a double to center, which plated Reed Harper.

The Muddies completed their scoring with a three-run sixth. Three straight base hits started the inning, while the third by Lien made it 6-2. Two batters later, Peterson drove home two more with a single to center.

Means (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out one.

Walters (6-8) picked up the victory, working six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four. In his final inning, the southpaw gave up two additional runs on a solo homer by Conor Bierfeldt and an RBI fielder's choice by Tanner Witt which scored Marin.

The Keys and Mudcats continue their series on Wednesday night. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (7-16, 4.67) starts for the Keys against Mudcats right-hander Seth Webster (8-7, 2.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
