Cardinals Move Within One Game of 1st with 6-3 Win against Travs

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals took the opening game of the series against the Arkansas Travelers, 6-3, before 4,719 fans at Hammons Field on Tuesday night. With the win, the Cardinals move just 1.0 game behind the Travelers for 1st place in the North Division Second Half Standings with six games remaining, three of which are head-to-head.

Facing Cardinals LHP Jimmy Reed, the Travelers (32-32, 68-65) opened the early advantage in the top of the first. Following a three-pitch strikeout to start the stanza, DH Raywilly Gomez and CF Chad Hinshaw knocked consecutive singles. After a fielder's choice hit into by RF Blake Gailen put runners at the corners with two down, 3B Brian Hernandez placed an RBI single through the middle to swing the Travs ahead, 1-0.

The Cardinals (31-33, 61-73) came right back in the bottom of the second against RHP Kyle McGowin (L, 8-9). 1B Jonathan Rodriguez opened the inning with an infield single that he knocked off the bag at third base. McGowin retired the next two batters with foul outs, but RF David Washington launched a two-run missile over the left-center field fence for his team-leading 15th home run, catapulting the Cardinals in front, 2-1.

Reed kept the lead intact with a scoreless top of the third, but Arkansas came back in the top of the fourth. Hernandez led off with a double to right field, before quickly coming home on an RBI double from 1B Wade Hinkle that squared the score at 2-2.

Springfield did not let the tie remain for long, swinging back into the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Rodriguez started the charge with a walk, before racing all the way home from first on an RBI double by 2B Bruce Caldwell. After taking third base on a groundout from C Michael Ohlman, Caldwell darted home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Washington for the 4-2 lead.

Arkansas chipped the deficit down in the top of the fifth inning. With one down, CF Chad Hinshaw doubled himself to second, before stealing his way to third. Hinshaw then came in the final ninety feet on an RBI groundout from RF Blake Gailen, bringing the Travelers within one run, 4-3.

After RHP Joey Donofrio got the Cardinals out of the fifth and tossed a scoreless sixth, the Cardinals once again stretched the advantage back out in the bottom of the sixth. With two down, Caldwell kept the inning alive with his second double of the night. Ohlman then struck with his team-leading 68th RBI of the year, bringing Caldwell home with a single to center field to make it 5-3.

Springfield added one more insurance run in the bottom of the seventh against LHP Chris O'Grady. With two down, CF Charlie Tilson moved into a tie for the league lead with his eighth triple of the year, before charging home on an RBI base hit by DH Mike O'Neill for the 6-3 advantage.

RHP Robby Rowland (W, 1-2) capped his night with a scoreless eighth inning, followed by a scoreless final frame from RHP Ronnie Shaban (S, 9) to slam the door in the 6-3 win for the Cardinals.
