Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (30-34, 65-67) snapped their four-game losing skid on Tuesday night by shutting out the Kannapolis Intimidators (28-35, 63-69) by a final score of 6-0. It was the 11th shutout pitched by the Suns this season.
Starting RHP Andrew Lee set the tone for the Suns pitching staff by tossing 4.2 innings and striking out a season-high seven batters. RHP Mario Sanchez (7-5) then took over and allowed just one base runner over 3.1 innings to earn the win. RHP Koda Glover finished off the shutout by striking out the side in the ninth. Starting RHP Zach Thompson (3-7) suffered the loss for Kannapolis. He threw four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out four.
Hagerstown got its offense going early for the second straight night. In the bottom of the second 2B Bryan Mejia led off by reaching on a fielding error by Kannapolis 3B Cody Daily. Catcher Matt Reistetter then doubled to left, putting runners on second and third with none out. Left fielder Jeff Gardner was able to bring Mejia home from third with a sacrifice fly to center field. Reistetter tagged up and advanced to third on the fly out, and an errant throw to third by CF Hunter Jones allowed Reistetter to score to make it 2-0.
The lead increased to 3-0 in the third when 1B Jose Marmolejos led off with a double, and moved to third on a groundout to short. Marmolejos then scored from third on the second sacrifice fly of the game, giving the Suns a three-run lead.
Third baseman Austin Davis was responsible for stretching the lead to five in the fourth. With a runner on first and no one out Davidson lifted a line drive over the center field fence for his sixth homerun of the season. It was the first homerun hit in the series by the Suns, and made it 5-0.
The final Suns run crossed the plate in the sixth. Again it was a sacrifice fly that did the damage, this time by Marmolejos giving him his league-leading 82nd RBI this season. Earlier in the day it was announced that Marmolejos was named to the South Atlantic League's Annual All-Star Team.
These teams will conclude their five-game series at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday, September 2. The Suns will send RHP Erick Fedde (0-2) to the mound for his fifth start and appearance with the Suns this season. He will square off against RHP Thaddius Lowry (12-7) for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm. For tickets call 301-791-6266 or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
