Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds scratched and clawed their way to a 6-3 victory over the Hickory Crawdads on Tuesday evening. After going back and forth early on, Delmarva scored four runs in the fifth inning to turn the tide for their fourth straight victory.
The game began as a seesaw battle with Delmarva jumping out in the first inning. Steve Wilkerson led off with a double, and scored on an RBI grounder by Logan Uxa. Hickory responded with their own RBI grounder by Michael De Leon in the second inning. MLB rehabber Jurickson Profar powered the Crawdads to a 2-1 lead with a solo home run, his first in nearly two years. Uxa plunked a home run off the right field foul pole to tie the game at 2-2.
Hickory briefly grabbed control with a two-out RBI single by Eduard Pinto in the fourth for a 3-2 lead. But the game hinged on the fifth inning. Delmarva rallied for four runs, sparked by a bloop single from Guillermo Salas and a bunt single for Daniel Franco in his Shorebirds' debut. Two walks forced in the tying run, and Cam Kneeland ripped a two-run double for a 5-3 lead. The advantage ballooned to 6-3 after a sacrifice fly by Yermin Mercedes.
From there, the Shorebirds' bullpen took over. Nigel Nootbaar pitched two perfect frames, picking up a win in the process. Tanner Chleborad went three scoreless for a nine-out save, stranding two in scoring position in the seventh and getting double plays in the eighth and ninth innings. In four games this series, the bullpen has pitched 14 innings with zero runs, eight hits, one walk and 12 strikeouts.
The Shorebirds try for a five-game series sweep over the Hickory Crawdads in Wednesday's finale, the last home game for Delmarva in 2015. Right-hander Matthew Grimes (9-7, 4.35) will try to crack double digits wins against right-hander Ariel Jurado (12-0, 2.34) for Hickory. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
