Connecticut Salvages Final Game of Series

STATEN ISLAND, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (32-34) were able to take the final game of the three game series against the Staten Island Yankees (36-33) by a score of 8-4 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers jumped on Yankees starter Derek Callahan (5-4) with three runs in the first inning. Right fielder Jose Zambrano (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) walked with one-out and so did first basemen Will Allen (2-4, BB). After a pop out center fielder Joey Havrilak (HR 4) came to the plate and drilled three-run home run out to right field and the Tigers had a 3-0 lead.

With the score now 3-1 Connecticut added to their lead in the third. Second basemen Pat Mackenzie walked to lead off the inning and then scored on an RBI double by Zambrano. Later in the inning Havrilak picked up his fourth RBI of the game on a groundout and Connecticut had a 5-1 advantage.

The Tigers where able to tack on two more in the fourth and then an additional run on an RBI double by catcher Shane Zeile in the fifth. At this point Connecticut had an 8-3 lead.

With Jack Fischer on the mound for the Tigers the Yankees scored an unearned run in the eighth and loaded the bases with two-outs in the ninth with designated hitter Trey Amburgey (HR 4) who had homer earlier at the plate but he popped out to second.

Tyler Alexander worked the first three for Connecticut giving up four hits and two runs with just one being earned. He struck out three and walked none. Ryan Milton (1-0) got the win as he threw three and a third innings giving up just a single run while striking out five. Jack Fisher got the final eight outs and allowed an unearned run.

Callahan took the loss for the Yankees and lasted just three innings surrendering three hits and five runs. He was undone by three walks. Staten Island used four pitchers on the night and issued seven walks and a hit batter. The first five walked batters all scored for Connecticut.

Connecticut will play a doubleheader tomorrow as they welcome the Brooklyn Cyclones into Dodd Stadium. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
