New York Boulders News Release

(POMONA, NY) -Needing a win to clinch their second straight regular season title, the Rockland Boulders were unable to hold an early lead and fell 6-5 to the Ottawa Champions on Tuesday night at Provident Bank Park.

Rockland (58-33) once again jumped out to an early lead as Stephen Cardullo drove in Jared McDonald on a groundout in the first. After Ottawa (45-45) tied the game in the second, the Boulders added three more runs in the third with Cardullo's two-run triple and a sacrifice fly from Joe Maloney. History would be made in the fourth as McDonald's solo home run to right broke the Can-Am League record for RBI by a team in a single season with 527.

Leading 5-1 after four innings, Boulders starter Marcus Jensen struggled in the fifth. The Champions scored four runs in the frame, tying the game at 5-5. A two-run homer from Mike Schwartz and a solo shot from Bryce Massanari were the big blows, helping Ottawa rally. That rally became a one-run lead in the top of the sixth when Corey Caswell's home run to left made it a 6-5 game in favor of the visitors.

The Boulders put together an impressive rally in the ninth as Giuseppe Papaccio and McDonald each singled to start the inning, putting the tying and winning runs on base with nobody out. However, a fielder's choice and double play ended any hopes of a walk-off win.

Andrew Werner (12-7) got the win going seven innings and allowing five runs but striking out five. Marcus Jensen (7-2) saw his streak of four straight wins come to an end, allowing six runs in his six and one-third innings of work. Alan DeRatt picked up his 23rd save of the season, stranding the tying and winning runs on base.

Cardullo paced the Rockland offense with three RBI while Jared McDonald went 4-for-5, extending his record on-base streak to 55 games. The Champions were led by Schwartz's two-run homer as he went 2-for-3 with two walks.

With the loss, and New Jersey win at Fargo-Moorhead, the Boulders' Magic Number to clinch their second straight regular season title remains at one. Rockland and Ottawa will play game two of their four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Provident Bank Park.
