Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

WINNIPEG, MB -- The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks cruised to a 9-2 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes before 5,810 fans at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday evening.

After both Winnipeg's Edwin Carl and Fargo-Moorhead's Taylor Stanton tossed scoreless first innings, the RedHawks got to Carl in the second.

Carl came into the game with the lowest ERA of all pitchers on Winnipeg's team with a 1.99 mark. Luke Bailey led off the top of the second and took a called fastball over the outer half of the plate. The next pitch Bailey dialed in and belted over the fence in left for a solo homer, his 13th of the season and fifth as a RedHawk. Carl would proceed to give up consecutive singles putting runners on the corners and Michael Wing at the plate. Wing ripped a single scoring Joe Dunigan making it 2-0. Three batters later Zach Penprase lifted a single plating Charlie Valerio giving the 'Hawks a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Fargo-Moorhead would tack on another run in the top of the fourth. Michael Wing would triple to lead off the inning. Wing has found his stride as of late for the 'Hawks. After recording just six hits in his first 13 games with Fargo-Moorhead, he has pounded out eleven hits with eight runs scored and seven RBIs in his last ten games. Michael Leach would drive him in two batters later on a fielder's choice making it 4-0.

Winnipeg would respond in the home half of the fourth. Tillman Pugh singled followed by a Brad Boyer base hit putting runners on the corners with Luis Alen at the plate. The longtime Goldeyes' battery mate delivered with an RBI single scoring Pugh. Two batters later Adam Heisler stepped to the dish and delivered a base knock allowing Boyer to wheel from second and step on home plate cutting the F-M lead in-half 4-2.

Taylor Stanton would settle down after the shaky fourth inning and retire the side 1-2-3 in the fifth. He turned around in the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to Josh Mazzola but retired three straight Fish stranding Mazzola at second keeping the Goldeyes at bay.

Winnipeg's Carl was subbed in favor of Brendan Lafferty for the seventh. After forcing Muren to fly out to deep center he plunked Mozingo who advanced to third on a Joe Dunigan single two batters later giving the 'Hawks runners on the corners with two outs. Charlie Valerio produced some two-out bingo with a single pushed to right scoring Mozingo and ending the line for Lafferty.

Rett Varner came on in relief in the seventh and hit Wing with his first pitch loading the bases for Ryan Pineda. The second baseman delivered with a two-out, two RBI double extending the lead to 7-2.

The RedHawks would tack on a run in the eighth and ninth for insurance as they went on to cruise for the 9-2 win.

Nick Cooney was fanatastic in relief as he went three innings allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out two. The only trouble he found was in the ninth, when he loaded the bases but he forced the former big leaguer Abercrombie to fly out to left to end the game.

Stanton (5-4) earned the win by going six strong innings allowing two runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Carl (5-1) took his first loss of the season going six innings allowing four runs on eight hits with tow walks and seven punch outs.

The 'Hawks stepped to the plate and registered 44 at-bats with 17 hits. Three RedHawks, Dunigan, Wing and Pineda, had three-hit games and only one starter walked away without a hit.

Fargo-Moorhead takes 3-of-4 at Shaw Park and improves to 40-53 while Winnipeg slips to 43-50. The RedHawks have won seven consecutive series and own an 18-6 mark in the last seven series. With seven games remaining, the club is only three games behind Winnipeg for second in the North division.

Tomorrow night the team begins a seven-game homestand to conclude the season. The New Jersey Jackals come to town for a four-game Can-Am interleague series before concluding the season with a three game Saturday-Monday set with Amarillo.
