SeaWolves Score Early, Take Down Ducks

The SeaWolves scored a pair of early runs on Monday night at Canal Park and won the series opener over the Akron RubberDucks 2-1.

Erie jumped ahead in the first inning for the second straight day. JaCoby Jones reached on a one-out error and was doubled home by Jeff McVaney for a 1-0 lead. Dominic Ficociello followed with a single and McVaney was thrown out by centerfielder Bradley Zimmer for the second out of the inning. Jason Krizan then doubled home Ficociello making it 2-0 SeaWolves.

The SeaWolves took the shutout into the eighth inning when they went to the bullpen and summoned Confesor Lara. Zimmer led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on an error. Yandy Diaz followed with a walk, putting the tying run on first. With one out, Carlos Moncrief hit into a fielder's choice, plating Zimmer and making it a 2-1 game.

The Ducks threatened again in the ninth against reliever Paul Voelker. With one out and a man on first, Eric Stamets hit into a fielder's choice and beat out the throw to first to keep the game alive. Bryson Myles then walked, putting the winning run on base for Akron. Zimmer worked a 3-2 count before flying out to left to end the game. Voelker earned his ninth save in 10 chances.

SeaWolves starter Josh Turley was electric tossing seven shutout innings, improving his record to 12-8. He allowed five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Wynton Bernard led off the eighth inning with a base hit for his 151st hit of the season. He is now tied with Shawn Wooten (1999) for fourth in team history. Bernard is 12 shy and 13 hits away from breaking the SeaWolves single-season hit record which was set by Omar Infante in 2001.
