21-year-old rookie right-hander Jose Berrios started for the Wings Monday, coming off a four-game stretch in which he struck out 39 batters in 27 innings. Berrios caught Deven Marrero looking at a third strike to open Monday's contest. A single and two fly outs later, the half-inning was over with Berrios having thrown 19 pitches.
The Wings took an early lead against PawSox starter Zeke Spruill. Aaron Hicks led off the bottom of the first with a double, moved to third base on a grounder by James Beresford, and scored when Santana ripped a double to right-center for a 1-0 Rochester lead.
In the second inning, the Red Wings made it 2-0. Eric Fryer and Doug Bernier hit back-to-back singles with one out. Fryer scored on a fielding error by Spruill, on a play at first base attempting to retire Beresford. Santana followed by beating out an infield hit, with Bernier scoring to give the Wings a 3-0 lead.
Pawtucket had a scoring chance in the third inning, when Mike Miller singled with one out. Miller stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded when Berrios retired the next two batters.
Berrios set down the first two PawSox batters in the fourth, but Chris Marrero drilled a home run off the auxiliary scoreboard in left field to make the score 3-1. It was Marrero's sixth homer of the season, and ended a stretch of 14 2/3 scoreless innings by Berrios.
Santana drilled a line drive home run that just cleared the wall in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the Wings' lead to 4-1. The homer was Santana's third with the Red Wings
Through five innings, Berrios had allowed three hits with no walks - having tallied 79 pitches.
Spruill (4-10) worked five innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned) with one walk. He struck out two and threw 95 pitches, 61 for strikes.
Berrios (5-2) pitched six innings with four hits and an earned run allowed. He did not walk a batter and struck out four, throwing 91 pitches - 63 for strikes. Aaron Thompson took over to start the seventh inning, setting down the side with a strikeout. In the eighth inning,
With one out and one on in the eighth inning, Mark Hamburger relieved Thompson. That's when Bernier made the play of the game, a diving stab on a line shot hit by Carlos Rivero to take away a potential extra base hit. Chris Marrero had a run-scoring single in the eighth to make it a 4-2 game.
Hamburger set down the side in order in the ninth, ending the game with a strikeout to pick up his first save of the season.
Santana's three hits gave him six multiple hit games in a row.
