Boston Breakers News Release

HANOVER, Mass. (Aug. 31, 2015) - The Boston Breakers announced today that the club has signed midfielder Kristie Mewis for the 2016 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) season with a club option for 2017. Per team and league policies, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"I am delighted to be signing Kristie to a contract with the club. She is an important player for us, on and off the field, so securing her was a necessity for the organization," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "She had a great year, and we expect Kristie to continue developing and becoming a real leader for us."

Mewis led the Breakers in scoring this season with a career-high six goals to go along with two assists. She was one of only three players on the team that started all 20 games this season, and she logged 1,785 minutes, second most on the club. In two seasons with Boston, the Hanson, Mass. native and former Boston College star has nine goals and four assists, starting 35 of the 37 matches she has appeared in.

Acquired by the Breakers on Nov. 18, 2013 via trade with Seattle Reign FC, Mewis began her NWSL career with FC Kansas City in 2013. There, she started all 20 games she appeared in and scored one goal in 1,784 minutes. The No. 3 overall pick in the inaugural 2013 NWSL Draft, Mewis was one of only six players on FC Kansas City to play more than 1,700 minutes.

Mewis will also go on loan to FC Bayern Munich in Germany's top-flight division Frauen Bundesliga. The loan runs until Dec. 31, 2015.

This is the second offseason that Mewis will take her talents overseas. In the fall of 2014, Mewis went on loan to FC Iga Kunoichi. She scored five goals in seven games, including the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Nittaidai in mid-November that prevented Iga from getting relegated to the second division in Japan.

Mewis joins a strong FC Bayern Munich side that recently opened its 2015 Frauen Bundesliga season. Bayern defeated Turbine Potsdam, 3-1, on Aug. 28.
