Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, Tenn. - Tyler Bortnick's stellar stretch at the plate earned him Southern League Player of the Week honors on Monday, the league announced. Bortnick becomes the third Jackson player to take home the award this year, after Tyler Smith and Jabari Blash won in consecutive weeks back in May.

Bortnick played in all seven of Jackson's games from August 24 to August 30, going 13-for-25 with two home runs, three doubles nine RBIs and 10 runs scored. The infielder hit in six of seven games, and he has both recorded a hit and scored a run in five-straight contests for the Generals. He also had four multi-hit games out of the seven he played in.

A pair of big games highlighted Bortnick's week. Against his former team in Montgomery on Thursday, he went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs batted in and three runs scored in an 11-3 win. It was Bortnick's second-career five-hit game and the first for a Jackson player since Rich Poythress in 2012. The infielder became the ninth Southern League player this season to accomplish the feat.

Bortnick powered the Generals by Pensacola with two home runs in the team's 8-2 win on Sunday. He took Tim Adleman deep with a solo shot in the first inning before clubbing a grand slam in the fifth. Prior to Sunday, the infielder's last home run was August 22, 2015 with the Triple-A Reno Aces as an Arizona Diamondbacks farmhand. It was his first-career multi-homer game and he joined Jabari Blash and Marcus Littlewood as Jackson players to go deep twice in a game this season.

This is the third weekly honor of Bortnick's career, after winning Midwest League Player of the Week with Low-A Bowling Green in 2010 and Florida State League Player of the Week with Class A Advanced Charlotte in 2011.

Seattle signed Bortnick in June after he started the 2015 campaign with the Independent Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League. He had spent parts of the last three years with the Triple-A Reno Aces with the Arizona Diamondbacks after he was traded from Tampa Bay in exchange for Ryan Roberts in 2012.

Tampa Bay originally drafted Bortnick in the 16th round back in 2009 out of Coastal Carolina. He was named an organizational All-Star in 2010 and 2011 by MiLB.com, and he played in the Arizona Fall League in 2011 as well.

The Generals have an opportunity to go for their second home series of the Second Half on Monday night. All-Star James Gillheeney (4-5, 3.13) goes for Jackson against Pensacola lefty Cody Reed (4-2, 3.03), who was acquired in the Johnny Cueto trade. First pitch from The Ballpark at Jackson is slated for 7:05 pm CT and you can listen to all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1390, FM 94.1 and 94.3) in Jackson and online via the TuneIn Radio App starting with the Tennessee Army National Guard Pregame Show at 6:50 pm CT!

Monday and Tuesday are both Fan Appreciation Nights in Jackson! The team is offering free admission to both contests to thank the Jackson fans for all their support in 2015!
