Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports scored seven runs in an inning for the second time in a week on Sunday night, and it was more than enough to win the rubber match of a three-game series with the Inland Empire 66ers. The Ports' big fourth inning sent them on their way to a 10-1 win over the 66ers. Coupled with losses by the Modesto Nuts and San Jose Giants, the Ports and Giants are now tied atop the Wild Card standings three games ahead of Modesto for the final two playoff spots with seven games left to play.

Inland Empire scored its first and only run in the top of the third inning. Roberto Baldoquin singled to open the inning and two batters later, Tyler Palmer doubled to left to drive in Baldoquin and make it a 1-0 ballgame. It was the only run allowed by Stockton on the night and thus the only tally allowed by Ports starter Casey Meisner (2-1), who retired seven of the final eight batters he faced and earned the win, going five innings and allowing four hits while striking out five.

Stockton matched its largest inning of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Yairo Munoz led off with a home run that tied the contest. After back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out, Tyler Marincov put the Ports ahead with an RBI single to left to make it a 2-1 game. Michael Soto followed with a biggest hit of the game, a grand slam to left-center to balloon the Ports lead to 6-1. Two batters later, Brett Vertigan tripled to center and scored on a two-out double by Munoz to make it a 7-1 contest.

Munoz' double knocked 66ers starter Jeremy Rhoades (4-5) from the contest. He would take the loss on the night, going 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out two.

The Ports added to their lead over the final two frames. Santiago Chavez led off the seventh with a double and scored two batters later on a double by Marincov to make it 8-1. It was the only run allowed by Tyler Carpenter in two innings of relief for the 66ers.

Stockton added two runs in the eighth off 66ers reliever Allan Busenitz. With one on and two out, Chavez and Jake Nottingham reached on back-to-back singles to load the bases. B.J. Boyd came up next and hit a check-swing roller up the third base line that ricocheted off the third base bag and into left field, allowing two runs to score and run the Ports lead to 10-1.

Lou Trivino, Sam Brag and Joel Seddon combined for four scoreless innings in relief of Meisner to close out the ballgame.

Following a day off on Monday, the Ports travel to Visalia on Tuesday to begin a three-game series with the Rawhide. Daniel Mengden (6-3, 4.45 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Visalia right-hander Ryan Doran (7-3, 3.57 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
