Zephyrs Drop Home Finale to Salt Lake

August 30, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Jett Bandy and Matt Joyce hit home runs, and Adam Wilk pitched seven strong innings as the Salt Lake Bees spoiled the home finale of the New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Z's were in search of their second series sweep of the season, but instead dropped their home finale for the fourth straight year. New Orleans finished with a 29-43 record at Zephyr Field.

New Orleans struck early with a first-inning run. Isaac Galloway led off with a single up the middle and stole second, then scored on Brady Shoemaker's two-out double off the left field wall.

Zephyrs starter Ivan Pineyro limited the Bees to three hits through the first four frames to stretch his consecutive scoreless streak to 18 1/3 innings. But Bandy led off the fifth with a towering drive over the left field fence to even the score.

Over his last 10 games, Bandy has two doubles, two homers and nine RBI.

Salt Lake jumped in front in the seventh with a two-out rally against reliever Craig Stem on back-to-back doubles by Jared Mitchell and Angel Rosa.

Matt Joyce, on a rehab assignment from the Los Angeles Angels, extended the lead an inning later with a two-run homer off Stem (0-2), who allowed three runs in three innings to take the loss.

Wilk settled in after the early struggles, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. Wilk (7-10) scattered four hits across seven innings with five strikeouts and one walk to win for the third time in his last four starts.

Vinnie Pestano earned his eighth save in nine opportunities with a perfect ninth inning.

The Zephyrs embark on their final road trip of the season beginning in Memphis on Monday night. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
