Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

KEIZER, Ore. - The Volcanoes opened their three game series with the Boise Hawks with a 5-0 loss in front of 2,673 fans at Volcanoes Stadium on Friday night.

After back-to-back errors in the fourth inning, Hawks' catcher Nate Causey crushed a three-run home run off of Volcanoes starter Luis Pino (3-1, 1.76 ERA) to give Boise a 4-0 lead.

The Hawks also added a run in both the third and fifth innings. In the third frame, Boise's Steven Leonard singled home Wilkyns Jimenez and in the fifth Kevin Padlo was brought home after getting on with a two out double.

The chances for Salem-Keizer were few and far between. Miguel Gomez launched a double off of the right field wall in the first inning but a Chris Shaw ground out stranded the third baseman. The Volcanoes only advanced one runner into scoring position the rest of the night when Steven Duggar advanced to third in the fourth inning. The Volcanoes failed to reach first base in their final 11 at-bats.

The Volcanoes tallied up three more errors on the night, to reach a league worst 106 fielding follies this season.

Boise's offense was accompanied by a strong pitching performance from right-hander Colin Welmon (2-4, 4.89 ERA). Welmon recorded five innings allowing only four hits while striking out two Volcanoes. It was the third consecutive game in which no Volcanoes batters were walked.

E.J. Encinosa and Armando Paniagua combined for three innings of scoreless work out of Salem-Keizer's bullpen. However the Volcanoes offence never came to life and was shut out for only the fourth time all season.

On Deck: Saturday, the Volcanoes' Drew Leenhouts (6-4, 2.89 ERA) will face Jack Wynkoop (2-3, 4.66 ERA) of the Hawks. Wynkoop and Leenhouts faced each other in Volcanoes Stadium on July 17, earlier in the year. Neither pitcher received a decision in the game that Boise won 9-5 in 10 innings.
