Scorpions Secure Second Straight Shutout with 0-0 Draw

San Antonio Scorpions News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Florida - The San Antonio Scorpions endured a two and a half hour delay for lightning and rain in Florida and then took a point on the road in a 0-0 draw in Jacksonville. The Alamo City boys earned their second straight shutout and remain only six points out of a playoff spot with one less game played than most of the NASL.

The best chance of the match for the Scorpions came in the second half after Billy Forbes entered the game as a substitute - his 41st straight appearance for the red and black - in the 58th minute. Omar Cummings beat the Jacksonville defense on the right side and broke into plenty of space to send in a seeing-eye cross to the Armada box. The Jamaican was focused on fellow islander Forbes, but he Turks and Caicos international was ever so slightly late to the ball and sent his shot over the crossbar.

For Jacksonville, Jemal Johnson nearly opened the scoring in just the 9th minute when he turned and ripped a shot into the top right corner, but he was fortunately for San Antonio fans ruled offside.

Scorpions goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes helped ear the point with numerous important saves, including one in the 37th on Jemal Johnson who hit a hard, low shot. Fernandes came up big on that attempt and again minutes later when he stopped Johnson's free kick.

Cummings also had a golden opportunity in the first half when he broke away from the Armada defense and looked destined to score. As he tried to go around Jacksonville goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo, the 'keeper knocked the ball away. Then defender Lucas Scaglia managed to block the follow-up shot on a would-be open goal to end the threat.

Next Saturday, the Scorpions play the first of three matches at Toyota Field in the span of eight days. The Fall Season-leading Ottawa Fury visit San Antonio on September 5th and then midweek, the red and black clash with the Carolina RailHawks on September 9th. Then there is another Saturday night special against Indy Eleven on September 12th to close out the longest homestand of the year for the Scorpions.
