Biloxi Shuckers News Release

PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers fell behind early and couldn't make up ground for a second-consecutive night against the Mississippi Braves, dropping game two of the five-game set, 8-2, at Trustmark Park. Biloxi has dropped the first two games by a combined score of 15-3, the worst two-game stretch in the young franchise's history. The loss also ties the season-series between the two teams at 10 wins apiece.

Orlando Arcia (1x4, R, 2B) waited until his final at-bat, but hit his league-leading 36th double in the ninth to set a new franchise record with a 13-game hitting streak. The streak passes Nathan Orf's 12-game hit streak from May 25-June 8. Garrett Cooper (3x4, RBI) brought home Arcia, four batters later with his first Double-A, run-scoring hit on a single to left and is now batting .571 (4x7) in two games as a Shucker. The ninth inning outburst only cut the Braves lead to 8-2, which was the final score

Drew Gagnon (1-1) made his first start as a Shucker and carried a 8.1 inning scoreless streak into the outing. The 2011 third-round draft pick walked a batter in the first, but would leave the runner stranded, before surrendering three runs in the second.

Barrett Kleinknecht singled to start the second for Mississippi. A strikeout to Matt Kennelly gave Gagnon an out, but a walk to Levi Hyams and a single to left by Sean Godfrey plated Kleinknecht. The throw from Nathan Orf (2x4) beat the runner home, but Kleinknecht's slide knocked the ball out of the glove of Parker Berberet, sending the ball into the first-base dugout, allowing Hyams to score as well with Godfrey moving up to third on the error. John Gant struck out for the second out of the inning, but Emerson Landoni singled and scored Godfrey to put Biloxi (31-30) in a three-run deficit. The three-run inning ended Gagnon's scoreless streak at 9.2 innings.

The Shuckers got a run back in the fifth on Berberet's (1x4, HR, RBI, R) second homerun of the season and second in his last three games to make it 3-1, but the Braves would get the run back on a RBI single by KD Kang in the bottom-half.

Gagnon, making his first start since July 25 while in Triple-A with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, needed 104 pitches to work through five innings. The California native allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Mississippi (34-27) opened the gates in the sixth against reliever Jacob Barnes, plating four runs on four hits, capped by a three-run double by Rio Ruiz to put the Shuckers in a seven-run hole. Ruiz kept one-ahead of Arcia by extending his hit streak to 14 games.

Yhonathan Barrios (IP, 6 pitches) and Damien Magnifico (IP, H, BB, SO) tossed the final two frames and did not allow a run to cross to the plate.

Biloxi will look to avoid dropping the series in game three on Sunday night. RHP Adrian Houser (3-0, 2.17) will try to stay perfect as a Shucker, while the Braves will counter with RHP Andrew Thurman (1-2, 3.68). First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com .
