Evansville Otters News Release

Washington, PA- Last night it was the Evansville Otters (47-42) with the big early inning, but tonight it was the Washington Wild Things (39-50) who were able to bat early, scoring four in the second on their way to a 7-2 score.

The Otters got on the board first tonight when Rolando Gomez doubled to begin the game. He was forced out trying to advance to third on a grounder by John Schultz, but Chris Sweeney followed with a double to put men on second and third with one out for Dane Phillips who grounded out to second, driving in the first run of the game.

Trevor Walch started the game for the Otters and thre just seven pitches in the first inning, but then the wheels came off the wagon. He threw forty pitches in the second inning with the big swing, a three run bases clearing double by Cody Herald, putting the Wild Thing sup 3-1. Walch would reload the bases and issue a bases loaded walk to the ninth batter of the inning for a 4-1 Wild Things score before finally getting out of the inning in the next at bat.

The Wild Thing plated two more in the third inning when again Herald got to Walch and the Otters. Herald doubled with a runner at second base and while attempting to steal third, JD Dorgan's throw sailed wide and high of the third base bag, allowing Herald to scamper in for the Wild Things sixth run.

The Otters got a run back in the sixth inning on another swing of the bat by Dane Phillips. Schultz began the frame with a double down the right field line, his 54th career double as an Otter giving him the most in franchise history, and Sweeney singled to left to put men at the corners and nobody out. Phillips hit a sac fly to right field to make it 6-2, but Nik Balog's looping liner in the next at bat was caught by the second basemen and Sweeney had drifted too far off of the first base bag and was doubled off to end the inning. To compound the base running gaffe, Maxx Garrett hit a solo home run for the Wild Things in the bottom of the sixth to put them back up by five, at 7-2.

The Otters threatened in the eight inning when with one out Rolando Gomez and John Schultz singled, but Sweeney and Phillips both struck out against the Wild Things reliever and it ended up being the last punch the Otters had to throw in the game, eventually losing 7-2.

John Schultz picked up a pair of hits in the game and in addition to owning the Otters' career mark for doubles, now has 108 hits on the season, which is tied for most in a single season along with Jeff Goldbach and Denver Stuckey. Trevor Walch took the loss for the Otters by giving up seven runs, six earned, in six innings, and drops to 8-7 on the season and has not collected a win in his last seven starts. Shane Weedman was a rare bright spot for the Otters tonight, going two innings in relief without allowing a run.

The Otters will look to take the series against the Wild Things tomorrow when they play a matinee game at 1:35 pm CDT. Tyler Vail (8-4, 4.95) will go toe-to-toe against the righty for the Wild Things Jeremy Holcombe (1-3, 4.68). The pregame show featuring Jake Donnelly will start at 1:15 pm CDT. The Otters will then head back home and have Monday off before going back out on the road for a three game set against the Normal Cornbelters.
