Zephyrs Take Second Straight from Salt Lake

Brady Shoemaker and Austin Nola drove in two runs each to lead a 15-hit attack for the New Orleans Zephyrs, who beat the Salt Lake Bees, 7-4 on Friday night.

New Orleans has already won two games in a series for the first time in a month, since claiming the first two meetings with Colorado Springs on July 28-29.

The Zephyrs scored three times in the first inning off Bees starter Tyler DeLoach and never looked back. Back-to-back RBI singles by Shoemaker and Vinny Rottino was followed by a sacrifice fly from Isaac Galloway.

Travis Blackley cruised through the first three innings, recording five strikeouts, but surrendered two runs in the fourth. Jett Bandy doubled into the left field corner and scored on a fly ball by Angel Rosa, and the Bees threatened again an inning later to force Blackley from the game.

Pat Urckfitz inherited two baserunners but protected the 3-2 lead by fanning Efren Navarro and inducing an inning-ending fly out from Bandy.

The Z's carried the momentum over to the plate by added three more runs in the fifth. Shoemaker doubled off the wall in center field to score a run, and Nola doubled over the head of right fielder Alfredo Marte to plate two more and extend the Zephyrs' lead to 6-2.

Nola charted his third straight multi-hit game and 15th in 52 games with the Zephyrs to boost his batting average in home games to .346.

Tomas Telis added an RBI single in the sixth, his third hit of the night. Telis is 10-for-22 in six games with the Zephyrs and has hit safely in each contest.

Bandy produced his second RBI double of the game in the seventh to bring the Bees within 7-4, but Greg Nappo pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Nick Wittgren retired the side in order in the ninth for his 16th save of the year, tied for third-most in the Pacific Coast League.

Urckfitz (1-5) was credited with the victory after tossing 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, and DeLoach (1-5) suffered the loss after suerrendering six runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Zephyrs play their penultimate home game of the season on Saturday at 6 p.m., with Fan Appreciation Night postgame fireworks.
