Intimidators avoid four-game sweep and fourth straight loss

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators scored five runs in the first inning and held on to beat the Delmarva Shorebirds, 7-3, Friday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Thad Lowry earned the win to tie the Intimidators franchise record with 16 held by Bryan Miller (2002-03).

Lowry (12-7) worked 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

After scoring one run in 10 innings Thursday the Intimidators exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first Friday. With the bases loaded Alexander Simon grounded out to score Michael Suiter from third. The next at bat Toby Thomas doubled to plate Hunter Jones and Louie Lechich. Mason Robbins then followed Thomas up with a double himself, scoring Thomas. The Intimidators completed the five-run first when Robbins scored on a Cody Daily double to make it 5-0.

In the fifth, Delmarva cut into the Intimidators lead by scoring its first two runs to make 5-2. With runners on second and third a Ademar Rifaela's infield single plated Steel Russel and then Steve Wilkerson grounded out to score Guillermo Salas.

In the home half of the fifth, Kannapolis responded with another run to make it 6-2. With the bases loaded 'Birds reliever Caleb Kellogg walked Daily to score Simon.

Both Delmarva and Kannapolis each scored a run in the eighth, but Brad Salgado sealed the win the save in the ninth (5).

Matthew Grimes took the loss (9-7) working 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five.

The Intimidators will begin a five-game road trip in Hagerstown starting Saturday before returning home on September 3 to wrap-up the 2015 season with five games against the West Virginia Power (A, Pirates).
