Charleston RiverDogs News Release
HICKORY, N.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs held a one-run lead in the eighth, but a Jose Trevino home run put the Hickory Crawdads in front for good as they held on to win 5-4 in the season series finale, Friday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.
With the game tied 3-3 after seven, the RiverDogs (27-33 second half, 61-69 overall) grabbed a one-run lead in the top of the eighth. Austin Aune, Vince Conde, and Isaias Tejeda hit three consecutive two-out singles to put Charleston in front 4-3. Conde was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the inning after Aune scored on Tejeda's base hit.
Brody Koerner (0-1) entered the game to replace Philip Walby in the bottom half of the frame. Edwin Garcia reached base with a one-out single, and Jose Trevino followed with his 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot, which gave Hickory the 5-4 advantage.
Collin Slaybaugh led off the top of the ninth with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and then Ryan Lindemuth drew a walk. Devyn Bolasky laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, and Angel Aguilar was intentionally walked.
With the bases loaded and one out, Billy Fleming hit a line drive to right field. Jairo Beras made the catch for the second out and threw out Collin Slaybaugh at the plate attempting to scoring the tying run ending the game.
Scott Williams earned his ninth save of the season by escaping the jam. Shane McCain (2-2) pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief of the starter Brett Martin to earn the win. David Palladino pitched six innings and gave up three runs on eight hits in his second start back with the RiverDogs.
Charleston got on the board first early in the game. Bolasky started the game with an infield single, and Angel Aguilar followed with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. The blast was his first since May 1, 2015.
The Crawdads (33-27, 77-51) cut the RiverDogs' lead in half when Beras led off the bottom of the second with a home run to center field. Hickory loaded the bases and Michael De Leon drove in two runs to give the home team a 3-2 lead with an RBI single to center.
The RiverDogs tied the game at 3 in the top of the fifth. Ryan Lindemuth doubled to start the frame, stole third base, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher Trevino.
With the loss, Charleston drops the season series to Hickory by just one game for the second straight year. The RiverDogs went 6-7 in 13 games against the Crawdads in 2014, and finish 2015 with a 5-6 record against Hickory.
