Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

HELENA, MONT. - Osprey starter Bo Takahashi allowed seven runs on 11 hits over 4.0 innings of work on Thursday night as the Missoula Osprey (38-26) dropped the opener of a two-game road series, 7-3, to the Helena Brewers (26-37) from Kindrick Field in Helena, Mont.

The seven earned runs and 11 hits were both new career-highs allowed for Takahashi, who was charged with his first loss of the season and fell to 7-1.

Joshua Torres, who made the start for Helena, picked up the victory and moved to 4-3 on the year after allowing just three runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work. Christian Trent and Quintin Torres-Costa combined to throw the final 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, sealing the Brewer victory. Both left-handed relievers struck out three batters and allowed just one hit.

Although Missoula ultimately fell in the ballgame, the Osprey came out strong and scored two runs on three hits in the first inning. Isan Diaz launched his 11th homer of the year in the opening frame, while Luke Lowery and Austin Byler each collected a hit of their own, with Byler tripling-home Lowery from first base to drive in the second run of the inning.

Takahashi managed to retire the side in order in the bottom of the first, but he ran into trouble in the second, allowing four runs on six hits as the Brewers sent 10 men to the plate. Making his Pioneer League debut after being called up from the AZL, Gilbert Lara belted an RBI-double in his first at bat, driving home Trent Clark who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk in his Brewer debut. Malik Collymore added the final two runs in the inning, posting a two-RBI single to run the advantage to 4-2 after two.

Helena tacked on two more runs in the third inning before the two squads traded a run in the fourth. Jose Cuas delivered an RBI-triple in the fourth for Helena, while Marcus Wilson doubled and came in on an RBI-sacrifice bunt from Matt McPhearson for the O's.

Both bullpens pitched well down the stretch, as a trio of Missoula relievers held Helena to just one hit and a walk with five strikeouts over the last 4.0 innings. Scott Schultz struck out three over 2.0 innings, while Andrew Potter punched out two in a scoreless seventh before Dallas Newton retired the side in the eighth.

Missoula will return to action tomorrow when it concludes the two-game series with Helena at 7:05 pm MT.
