Blue Crabs Fall to Long Island for the Ninth Straight Time

(Waldorf, MD August 27th 2015)---Long Island came into play tonight with a 10-2 record over Southern Maryland this season. Their momentum against the Blue Crabs here the 2015 campaign carried over to this evening's game as the Ducks defeated the Blue Crabs 6-3 in game one of the four game series.

Long Island got the scoring started early, as they pushed across two runs on four straight hits in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Sean Burrough's looped a single into right center to allowing Cleary Jr. to score to make it 1-0. The next hitter Mike Blanke singled to right field to score Dan Lyons to make it 2-0. In the top of the fourth, with two runners on base, Dan Lyons stepped up to the plate and ripped a three run homerun over the wall in left field to make it 5-0.

Southern Maryland cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Jovan Rosa started the rally with a walk, followed by a Bryant Nelson double to put runners at second and third. Two batter later, Keith Castillo stepped to the dish, and drove in the pinch runner Tyler Wagner with a single. Two batters later, with the bases loaded Fred Lewis walked to the plate, and dropped down a bunt single to sending Nelson across the plate to score to make it a 5-2 ballgame in favor of Long Island.

The Ducks added insurance runs at the perfect time in the ballgame to counter Southern Maryland. Mike Blanke led off the top of the fifth, and drilled a homerun over the wall in left to make it 6-2. Southern Maryland would add one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but fell short by the 6-3 final.

The Ducks out-hit the Blue Crabs 13-10, led by Dan Lyons, and Mike Blanke three, and two runs driven in respectively. Southern Maryland left ten runners on base, and five of them in scoring position. LHP Darin Downs picked up his third win of the season, going six innings, allowing two runs, on seven hits, and striking out six.

Game two of the series will take place tomorrow evening. The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M at Regency Furniture Stadium. RHP John Brownell (10-3, 3.12 ERA) will start for Long Island, while RHP Tim Sexton (0-0, 3.92) will throw for Southern Maryland.
