SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters ninth-inning rally fell a few feet short on Thursday evening after Chris Wallace was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game, giving the Camden Riversharks a 6-5 win. The second-straight loss for Sugar Land moves its record to 20-27 in the second half and 56-61 overall.
Camden jumped on top of Kelvin Villa and the Skeeters early in the contest to claim an early lead. Paddy Matera and Brandon Chaves logged back-to-back one out doubles to post a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Skeeters responded to the Riversharks early lead with the tying run in the top of the second. Johan Limonta and Kevin Russo collected consecutive leadoff singles before being moved up 90-feet on a sacrifice bunt. Patrick Palmeiro lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Limonta and tie the contest at one.
The Riversharks regained the lead in the bottom of the second before Villa finally settled into the contest. Evan Crawford legged out a two-out triple and came in to score on the ensuing pitch after catcher Chris Wallace allowed a passed ball.
Both starters found their rhythm in the third inning, keeping their opposition off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth. Delwyn Young drew a walk with one out and a single from Wallace put runners on the corners. Johan Limonta rifled a double to tie the game and move the go-ahead run in Wallace up to third. Russo elevated a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Skeeters their first lead of the night. Palmeiro picked up his second RBI of the night with a single scoring Limonta to increase the lead to 4-2.
Camden regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh against Ramon Delgado on in relief. Jose Gil reached on a leadoff error before three-straight one-out singles allowed the Riversharks to cut the lead to one and chase Delgado from the game. Dan Runzler surrendered a ground-rule double to Matera on an 0-2 offering, giving Camden a 6-4 advantage.
Robbie Weinhardt gave the Skeeters a chance to tie the game in the top of the ninth with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth. Young reached base after being plunked by Matt Gorgen to open the inning. Wallace followed with a walk to put the tying run on base. Renny Osuna brought home Young with an RBI single to close the gap to one and move the tying run into scoring position. Palmeiro pulled a base-hit through the left-side of the infield. With Wallace being waved around third, Crawford made a strong throw to the plate to cut down the Skeeters catcher for the final out of the night, securing the 6-5 win for the Riversharks.
