Volcanoes Victorious over Everett in 10 Innings

August 27, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

Steven Duggar drove in Ronnie Jebavy in the 10th inning to give the Volcanoes a lead they had just seen vanquish in the bottom of the ninth, to defeat the AquaSox 3-2 on Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Everett tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth off of a two-out Corey Simpson pinch-hit two-RBI single off of closer Caleb Smith. But Salem-Keizer rebounded right away in the 10th to even this series at two game apiece.

Grant Watson made his second start of the season for the Volcanoes and fared far better than his first outing. The left-hander out of UCLA went 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and two walks, striking out four.

Salem-Keizer took its initial 1-0 lead in the third inning after Junior Amion and Shilo McCall led off the frame with back-to-back doubles.

Chris Shaw then doubled the Volcanoes' lead in the ninth inning, leading off the frame with a no-doubter over the left-field scoreboard, his team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Caleb Smith (3-2, 3.13) then came on for the save and ran into quick trouble. Alex Jackson and Luis Liberato both reached on a walk and a single, before Arturo Nieto laid down a sacrifice bunt down to move both men into scoring position. After issuing a groundout, Everett's manager Rob Mummau signaled to his bench, and Simpson laced a sharp ground ball into left field, to tie the game at 2-2 and send the 1,753 home fans into a frenzy.

The Volcanoes' offense showed no signs of mental lapse after being so close to victory. Against left-hander Matt Clancy (1-4, 1.29), Jebavy doubled off the left field wall with one out, stole third base, and was driven in on Duggar's line-drive single into right field.

Smith would prove clutch the second time of asking, retiring the AquaSox in order in the bottom half of the 10th to seal the 3-2 victory.

Salem-Keizer moves back to .500 with the victory at 14-14 in the second half standings and remain three games back of the Eugene Emeralds in the Southern Division. Everett drops to 16-12 in the second half but remain 2.5 games ahead of Vancouver for first place in the Northern Division.

First pitch for Thursday's rubber match is set for 7:05 at Everett Memorial Stadium with the Volcanoes Live Pre-game set at 6:35.
