Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Sioux City, IA August 25, 2015- The Gary South Shore RailCats fought to the last out with the Sioux City X's only to come up short 2-1 Wednesday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The RailCats dropped the series 2-1 to the American Associations best club but Sioux City was put to the test in the three games.

The game was in doubt in the top of the ninth as the X's summoned their closer Jose Flores. The RailCats were able to get the runners at the corner when Alex Hernandez reached on an error and Spencer Mahoney walked. Matt Hibbert ran for Hernandez and stole second then went to third on a wild pitch that walked Mahoney. The RailCats had two chances to tie the game or perhaps take the lead but Flores got Michael Vaughn to pop out to short and Elbert Devarie grounded out to third and Sioux City held on.

AJ Quintero got the start for the RailCats and had a big turnaround from his previous outing in Fargo where he gave up five runs. Quintero would give up two runs in five innings to keep the RailCats in the game against the league's best offense. Quintero ran into trouble in the third when he hit Michael Lang with a pitch with two outs. Lang then stole second and came home on a two out double from Renee Tosoni to make it 1-0.

The X's picked up their second run in the sixth with a one out triple from the nine man Tim Cowell. Matty Johnson then walked to put runners at the corners. Lang then hit a soft ground ball to short that scored Cowell with a fielder's choice. The RailCats matched the X's with the exact same play an inning later to cut the lead to 2-1 when Brennan Metzger hit a slow hopper to short off of Eric Wordekemper to score Mahoney who walked earlier in the frame. The South Shore had a chance in the eighth and looked to have the bases loaded and two outs but a close call at third was overturned to end the inning for the RailCats.

Wordekemper (7-2) worked six innings to pick up the win holding the RailCats to just one run on the night. Flores picked up his 20th save in working the ninth. Quintero (1-3) was charged with the loss giving up five hits and two earned runs in five innings.

The RailCats finished the road trip at 2-4 and will return home Thursday night to face the New Jersey Jackals of the CAN-AM League. LHP Renee Solis will go for Gary while RHP Anthony Claggett goes for New Jersey with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10pm. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
