Goldeyes Split Doubleheader with Quebec

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It was a long night for Winnipeg, as the Goldeyes and Capitales split a doubleheader Wednesday evening in Quebec City.

The Goldeyes took the first game of the night 4-1, while the Capitales hung on to win the second 4-3 in extra innings, for a combined playing time of five hours, 32 minutes over two days.

With the split, Winnipeg sits seven games behind the Laredo Lemurs in the American Association wild card race.

After inclement weather suspended Tuesday's game in the second inning with Winnipeg leading 1-0, the Capitales kept the Goldeyes off the scoreboard until the top fifth. Reggie Abercrombie doubled to score Casio Grider from second, and Casey Haerther singled to drive in James Boddicker and Abercrombie to give the Goldeyes a 4-0 lead.

The Capitales responded and scored their only run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom sixth, and the Goldeyes won the nine-inning game 4-1.

Haerther led the Goldeyes' bats with two hits and two RBI, while Abercrombie had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.

Kyle Anderson pitched the first inning on Tuesday night for a no-decision, while right-hander Edwin Carl started the continuation in long relief. Carl struck out five and allowed one run on four hits in five innings for the win. Closer Jailen Peguero struck out two in the bottom ninth for the save, while Capitales starter McKenzie Acker suffered the loss.

The Capitales opened the second game of the night with three runs in the first, courtesy of an RBI single and a two-run home run. The Goldeyes answered with a run in the following inning but really responded in the fifth, scoring twice to tie the game at 3.

Controversial calls in the sixth and seventh innings saw both Capitales manager Patrick Scalabrini and Goldeyes manager Rick Forney ejected from the game, but the teams stayed tied at 3 until Quebec scored on an RBI single in the bottom eighth to win the shortened seven-inning contest 4-3.

Brad Boyer had two hits and one RBI in the second game for Winnipeg, while Boddicker made a barehanded catch Goldeyes broadcaster Steve Schuster dubbed the "play of the year" to end the bottom sixth.

Quebec's Deryk Hooker claimed the win, while Peguero gave up the winning run in the bottom eighth and suffered the loss for the Goldeyes. Winnipeg's Brad Mincey struck out three and allowed three runs on three hits for a no-decision in his first professional start.

The Goldeyes will return to Winnipeg to open an 11-game homestand against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Friday at 7 p.m.
