Nashville Sounds News Release
RENO, Nev. - The Sounds fell victim to a five-run seventh inning and squandered an opportunity to win the series, losing 11-5 in Wednesday's series finale against Reno at Aces Ballpark.
After Reno took an early lead by scoring two in the second, Nashville tied things up in the fourth. Brent Morel was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Jason Pridie followed by smashing his 18th home run of the season. The two-run shot was the outfielder's 14th on the road and closed the gap in his pursuit to steal 20 bases and hit 20 home runs this season.
The home team responded with one run in the fourth off starter Sean Nolin and three in the fifth against reliever Taylor Thompson. Aces' left fielder Peter O'Brien left his footprint all over the game, smashing a leadoff shot in the fourth and taking Thompson out for a three-run homer the very next inning. The two home runs upped O'Brien's total to 23 this season.
Nolin dealt four innings while still recovering from his recent trip on the disabled list. The lefty had three runs score on six hits, leaving after 52 pitches. He added three strikeouts but the home run to O'Brien was his second in the last two starts.
The Sounds again battled back and put another two runs on the board in the sixth. After a Pridie walk and Ryan Roberts double, his 30th this season, Rangel Ravelo hit a sacrifice fly. With two away, Nate Freiman drove Roberts home from third, smacking a double of his own. The score stood at 6-4 after six.
Reno continued to put up runs though and pushed the game out of reach by taking advantage of an extra opportunity. An error at second base jumpstarted a five-run frame for the Aces in the seventh. Three of Reno's nine doubles in the game came in the inning, padding the lead to 11-4 after seven.
Nashville plated another run in the eighth on an Andy Parrino RBI single, but eventually fell 11-5 in the finale. Joey Wendle did extend his hitting streak to 10 games, collecting his 151st hit of the season with a single in the first.
Since Reno's initial season in 2009, Nashville has tied or won six of the seven series the two teams have played. The Sounds lead the all-time series against the Aces, 18-10. The loss dropped Nashville's second half record on the road to 16-12.
With half of the eight-game road trip now complete, Nashville will head to Tacoma to play the Rainiers at Cheney Stadium beginning on Thursday night. Right-hander Nathan Long (3-4, 5.17) will duel against Forrest Snow (9-8, 3.97) in the 9:05 p.m. CST series opener.
