Martinez Marching Toward PCL Batting Title

August 26, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (73-59) finished off a series win against the Sacramento River Cats (66-66), taking the finale by a score of 5-1. Alex Gordon started in left field while going 1-for-3 with a RBI on the night, and the Royals All-Star is now 5-for-15 in four games during his MLB Rehab Assignment.

Jose Martinez continued his hot stretch with his 13th multi-hit game in his last 15 starts, and is batting .525 (31-for-59) during that span. In his first season at the Triple-A level, Martinez is hitting .392 and is only four plate appearances off the pace to qualify for the Pacific Coast League Batting Title race. If he holds the .392 mark it would be a modern era record for the PCL, with the current record being .383 by New Orleans' Rick Short in 2005, and he would become the first batting title winner for Omaha since Mark Quinn in 1999 for the Omaha Golden Spikes.

While Gordon provided the first run of the game on a RBI single in the fifth, a four-run seventh inning prolonged by an error on Sacramento put the game in hand for the Chasers. Brett Eibner drove in two runs during the rally, upping his team-leading total to 72 RBI. He has eight RBI in his last four games, and his total of 72 RBI ranks second among any Kansas City Royals Minor Leaguer in 2015 behind Ryan O'Hearn of Lexington and Wilmington.

J.C. Sulbaran blanked the River Cats over 5.2 innings of work, and just narrowly missed his third quality start in his first six outings at the Triple-A level. Sulbaran has not given up a run in 11.2 innings over his only two starts at Werner Park, with all 18 of his runs allowed with Omaha coming in road games.

The Storm Chasers now welcome the Fresno Grizzlies to town, the only team that has already clinched a playoff berth in the PCL. Omaha will look to keep their slim playoff chances alive with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
