Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 26, 2015) - Javy Baez knocked in two runs and right-hander Carlos Pimentel picked up his league-leading 12th win as the Iowa Cubs (73-58) took down the Fresno Grizzlies (79-52) 3-2 in Pacific Coast League action at Principal Park on Wednesday evening.
Iowa took three out of four to win the series against the Grizzlies. The I-Cubs are 15 games over .500, matching their high water mark of the season.
Fresno struck first in the top of the third inning when Preston Tucker drove in Jonathan Villar with an RBI groundout to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.
Iowa struck back in the bottom of the third when Baez hit a two-out infield RBI single to Grizzlies pitcher Brett Oberholtzer. The lefty tried to make an off-balance throw and overthrew first base to allow a second run to score to make it 2-1 Iowa.
Pimentel (12-5) allowed just the one run on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings to pick up the victory.
Oberholtzer (7-4) suffered the loss for Fresno. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
The I-Cubs added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Baez hit an RBI single to center field, increasing Iowa's lead, 3-1.
Right-hander Brian Schlitter allowed an unearned run in the top of the ninth but was able to close the door to pick up his 22nd save of the season, tying a career high. Schlitter is now three saves short of Blake Parker's 2014 team-record of 25 saves.
Baez led Iowa offensively, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. He was the only I-Cub with a multi-hit night.
Tony Kemp paced Fresno offensively. He went 2-for-4 on the night. Tyler White went 1-for-2 but got on base three times thanks to two walks.
The I-Cubs will begin a four-game series Thursday with the Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 6:38 p.m. CT. Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada (3-5, 4.16) is scheduled for Iowa against River Cats lefty Nik Turley (6-6, 4.64). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com.
