Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (August 25, 2015) - One thing the Stone Crabs showed over the last two days against the Mets were flashes of the resilience that help make any team better. In Monday night's 8-5 win, a scoreless innings streak of 30 was finally put to bed, in addition to the team's eight-game losing streak. In the third and deciding game of the series, the Mets nearly took all the momentum away with a four run fifth. However, the Stone Crabs would soon tie it, only to watch St. Lucie break the tie late on Matt Oberste's two run single in the ninth before 2,014 at Charlotte Sports Park.

The night started with four shutdown innings from starters Chih-Wei Hu and Jake Kuebler. For Hu, it was a chance to win his first game in a Stone Crabs uniform while Kuebler was making his first start for the Mets after going 4-0 in 11 relief appearances. Mike Marjama got on with a two out single in the fourth, advancing to third following a stolen base and a wild pitch. Granden Goetzman came up next, but Kuebler ended the inning with a flyout to left to keep the game scoreless.

Hu showed the type of stuff that made him so elusive all throughout the first half with the Fort Myers Miracle. Using a moving fastball that changed speeds, he struck out the side in the second, and went 1-2-3 in the third and fourth while keeping the Mets hitless. After retiring 11 straight, he walked Stefan Sabol to start the fifth. Amed Rosario singled, and Maikis De La Cruz dropped a bunt single to the left of the mound, although it looked like Hu was a bit out of position after initially charging in to field the grounder.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, the righthander lost a battle with second baseman Phillip Evans, and a walk gave the Mets a 1-0 lead. On the very next pitch, Colton Plaia grounded a two run single up the middle, and Yeixon Ruiz made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field. Hu came out of the game after just four and two thirds, remaining winless since July 8.

It seemed like Kuebler would coast through the bottom of the inning after getting two quick groundouts off the bats of Jace Conrad and Armando Araiza. Justin Williams changed the course with a double inside the first base line for his first extra-base hit, snapping an 0-for-21 stretch at the plate. Yoel Araujo then drew a walk, allowing Braxton Lee to roll a single into center and make it a 4-1 game. Kean Wong then got ahead 2-1, and ignited the crowd with a rocket of a triple to the wall in right center to get the 'Crabs back to within a run. Kuebler exited for Jimmy Duff, who got Hector Guevara to fly out to left for the final out.

Duff made a mistake to Marjama to start the sixth, hanging a pitch middle in for the sweet swinging first baseman to crush a game-tying solo home run to left. The 4-4 tie would hold until the ninth, when the Mets came up against Colton Reavis. De La Cruz fought back from 0-2 down to line a single into right center to start the inning, and watched as Reavis walked Evans to end his night on the mound. Mike Franco entered after winning the previous night in relief, and handled a Playa sacrifice bunt for the first out. At the top of the order, Ruiz chased a very high fastball for the second out, but Franco walked Cruzado with a 3-2 pitch to load the bases for Oberste. Coming into the at bat 4-for-9 with the bases loaded, Oberste blooped a two run single that glanced off the top of Marjama's mitt and ended up down the right field line to put the Mets back in front 6-4.

Going for the win after a scoreless eighth, Robert Coles surrendered consecutive singles to Conrad and Araiza to put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth. Williams and Araujo couldn't help the cause, and a pair of strikeouts sent up Lee as the final chance. Mets manager Luis Rojas summoned lefthander Kyle Regnault, who fanned Lee for his second save of the series with a breaking ball in the dirt to send the league into an off day.
